Polanski's Bomb

This film is supposed to be loosely based on 'Alice in Wonderland'. It doesn't matter: it's still a woefully unfunny, uninteresting and scattershot film. Director Roman Polanski, 37 years after it was made, might even agree.

Sydne Rome, as a whimpering version of Alice, is just another cookie-cutter cutie from central casting. This vacuous and pouty actress has absolutely no charisma and sorely lacks the acting strength to carry the film, which she is largely expected to do. Marcello Mastroianni, meanwhile, is really slumming in this movie. He embarrasses himself.

The film was billed as a comedy, or even a 'madcap' comedy, and it's nothing of the sort. It desperately digs for laughs. The only bright spot for me was the all-too-brief appearance of wild-eyed British actor Hugh Griffith. Now, if you're looking for an actor to carry a film, he's the one to do it. All in all, this film was a huge stinker.

At the time critics derided it as unworthy of Polanski. He didn't care. It was cheap, it was fun and the whimiscal escape paved the way for his masterpiece Chinatown. After 37 years I'm sure his thoughts about this film remain unchanged - he has more pressing things on his mind.

This was Polanski's holiday from care, fear, shame and repression. Sure the dialogue is stilted but in spite of its shortcomings, I think it remains cheerful and unpretentious and was exactly what Polanski needed to do at the time. It is after all, only erotic entertainment, which it plays perfectly. If you ask me, his only real turkey is Oliver Twist.

This movie is wonderful.
Sydne Rome character is the young woman figuring out the world she lives in.

Any young beautiful girl finds herself harrased by bunch of stupid guys who just want to boink her - the failed rape scene in the beginning.
Every young beautiful girl wants to be seduced by an experienced man - Mastroiani's character.
Every woman wakes up one day next to an old guy who she doesnt recognize - the pianist character.
Every woman is courted by men who just cant compete - Mosquito, the Cook guy.
and so on.

I found the sheer stupidity of it to be funny, but yes, Hugh Griffith was the highlight. He was brilliant.

It's a little better than Pirates and a damn sight more entertaining than Tess, IMO.

I got my dark tannin' oil... lay out by the pool, put on my dark tanning oil...

Agreed. Incredibly not funny or entertaining. Had to turn it off after an hour.

It's interesting to see how some people twist themselves into knots just to explain, for some damned reason, how this is really a great movie.
