Essay Hubbel read in college ?? A Country Made of Ice Cream

Is there anyway I could get a copy of the full text of this "Essay" that so captivated Katy? Can't find it on line.

His essay isn't even revealed in the book either. It's kind of annoying. I guess they didn't want Hubbel's writing style to be displayed too much. Maybe it was because that might invite criticism and judgement of his talent by the audience and he was supposed to be a very talented writer but that's just a guess. Every time I watch this movie, I want to hear the whole essay.

Agreed. I got annoyed when the theme music was playing over it.

The essay is a plot device, hence it only has to SUGGEST that it's a good piece of writing. The single important part of it, its theme, is read aloud, and establishes three things: 1. Hubbell is very talented; 2. it's at least in part autobiographical ("things came too easily to him"), giving us some personal insight into Hubbell's self-awareness; and 3. he's a better writer than Katie, she can't stand it, and it forms the basis for her to try to make his talent conform to her ambitions (i.e. the consolation prize for not possessing talent of one's own). That's it. It's not necessary to supply more than that; one line helps to advance the plot.

The essay from college and the novel are 2 separate works
