I'm a big Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fan and in that fandom its quite fashionable to (justifiably) mock a few films that Joe Don Baker has made over the years.

i caught up with this after seeing The Rock version and was most impressed. it came across as a proper gritty, man's man 70's movie that didn't flinch and also didn't descend into cheese. the fact that it's based on a true story made it even more amazing to me.

i will be recommending this to friends.

I agree this movie is an underrated classic. Other than perhaps the need for a slightly taller boom man this movie is really great.
