Taylor-Burton vehicle

Kept thinking of this mythic couple while watching the film.Taylor did do a couple of "is she crazy or isn't she" characters in the early 1970ies.I'm thinking "Nightwatch" and "Identikit"..I think this film might have worked better as a Taylor-Burton film, albeit one of the less successful ones.

Yeah it certainly would have been a movie along the lines of what Taylor & Burton were known for. I wouldn't say the movie would have been better for it, because David Hemmings does an absolutely perfect job of being a vicious, sarcastic, a-hole, and then flopping back into warm & sensitive mode either because he needs to or because his character genuinely feels some regret about being an a-hole. And being that Gayle Hunnicutt was actually his wife at the time, you can feel the actual emotion behind some of her equally vicious retorts back to him about his carousing with other women, and their fighting over why he actually bothers to stay with her. I suppose real life quarreling fueling the acting was often the case with Burton & Taylor as well, but I prefer the movie the way it is. Burton & Taylor had well enough opportunities to demonstrate this in the movies they made together.
