Probably the most disturbing ending I have ever seen!

Anyone else see this? What do you think?

reply

I haven't seen this since the early 80's but I remember it well. It makes the 6th sense look pedestrian. I hope I haven't damned the film with faint praise.

Shocking ending. I remember seeing this during the mid-eighties. I think "The Others" copied the story-line. If only it was available on VHS.

reply

Yes!, I thought that when I saw 'The Others'. I saw it in the early 80s too and also dream of a copy.

reply

"The Others" was based on this which was based on a play. You could say that this was a ripoff of "Carnival of Souls" in which a young woman is haunted by specters and realizes (or the audience does) that she died at the beginning of the story when her car went into a lake and she drowned.

Yes this is the movie you are thinking of. Although you do not find out that they crashed until the end.

You heard him, slow ahead! Slow ahead! I can go slow ahead! C'mon down and chum some of this S***!

Is the last shot of this movie them dead in a car crashed into a tree? They were dead most of the movie, and when they went over a bridge and swerved to miss a tree, they really did crash and were ghosts?
Does anyone know where I could find this movie?

reply

Yes, this is the movie.

I have been looking for this movie for a while. Can you help me?
Thanks, Ruben

reply

Was it remade? I remember lots of flashbacks to the "almost crash" incident and I thought the woman had long, blond hair.

reply

Only released in the USA/Canada on the Mirisch label... long out of print. Try eBay or Amazon as there may be used copies out there.

No word on any DVD release...

reply

Thanks so much. Believe it or not, a guy made me a copy.

reply

I think the makers of 'Dead End' have watched this movie!

reply

Actually, it didn't disturb me at all. :/
I guess that is probably because I've seen The Others years ago, and this just didn't seem nearly as shocking or as creepy throughout.

reply

Well I have literally been more shocked at other movie's endings than this movie, but as movie endings go, this one was, yes, figuratively rather shocking. I wasn't surprised by the ending because I'd basically heard about it, though enough years went by and it hadn't been spoiled in detail, but I knew the play it was based on and that The Others was based on this & the play, plus I began to suspect, myself, as well near the end of the movie...however, it was still a good ending. It had impact.

This film is very underrated for that very reason: the ending is unforgettably creepy and unexpected: ingenious and so original!

Even larks and katydids are, supposed by some, to dream
