Marlon and Bertlucci discussed the butter scene (Brando's idea) before hand not telling her so to get her honest,pure reaction, which is why Brandon keeps looking at her eyes. She was told prior to the scene that they added soemthing and just go along with it. When he told her to get the butter, Bertlucci pointed her to go to another room where a PA handed her the prop and it was her idea to throw it at him, which is why Brando looked up at her.
The lines she had about the hallow spot were scripted, but Brando sliding the butter over to her and asking to get in her pants was not scripted and Maria was just told to go along. Brando was strong and flipped her over and forced her down very hard. Yes, it was anal, but it was faked, although Brandon told Playboy a few years after the film that he got a hard on during the scene, which made her tears even more intense because she wanted to stop the scene. She was mad at everyone in on set after the scene and wanted to leave. She was allowed to leave and they wrote the record playing scene that night and shot the next scene the next morning after Brando and others had assured her that the butter scene would earn her high awards and recognition in the film because it was great acting, and she said she wasn't acting. Brando disagreed and told her she was one with her character and really gained respect for her.
