This is so funny! In Holland they don't consider sex a bad thing to see for adolescent children. So they rated this movie with pretty graphic sex suitable for twelve years! I agree with that, because one should not be afraid about sex; it should not be a taboo: sex is not bad! When you're twelve you want to know everything. It doesn't mean you're gonna do it, but you're just curious what it's all about.
I was more shocked by some music videos in daytime that did not show anything but were very sexual. I don't think it's necessary to confront really small children that watch in daytime with those clips. I would sooner let a twelve-year old watch a realistic movie like Turks Fruit.
Netherlands 12 Sweden 15 Finland 18 Germany 18 UK 18
I'm from the Netherlands and it's pretty funny indeed to see how the Dutch raiting is so different from the (for example) American raiting. But a movie like "turks fruit" (or Turkish Delight) is not to be aired untill 10 p.m. because most (young) children are sleeping then.-xxx- luv nieltje
Well, RTL 4 broadcasted the movie 20.30! The soaps were just finished and then we saw that guy jacking off in front of a picture, saying: "I'll lick the *beep* of your ass!" :D
I'm also from the Netherlands and i'm ashamed to say that i have never actually seen this movie... And it's true that the Netherlands most of the time aren't that hard with judging the age-ratings of the movies, but it's getting worse. Troy was 16+. So was Gothika. I'm 15 years old myself and going to those movies with just your friends is impossible. I think Belgium is one of the easiest countries. Scary Movie 1 was 16+ here, but in Belgium it was for all ages.
Yeah, also a movie like Love Actually (the best romantic comedy I ever saw) is rated R in the USA but in Holland it's rated AL (all ages). Now I wouldn't know if it's suitable for 8 year old children since it does have some nudity, but such a sweet movie to be rated R is ridiculous. I would rate it 12 years and up.
dutchfilmworks was the first european distributor to also put out the uncut Ichi the killer dvd here in Europe, Belgium and Holland r great when it comes to stuff like this last week some Belgium channel even showed Ichi the killer on tv :')(almost midnight but still)
Idem Amélie, rated R in the US, AL in the Netherlands. Bridget Jones, R in US, AL in the Netherlands. It's very different. Only I found it *beep* that The Dark Knight was rated 16+ in the Netherlands while PG-13 in US. And I find it rather weird that movies like 'The Grudge' are rated PG-13 in the US, appearently the MPAA only looks to gore, sex and drugs, not watching the total picture; such movies are a lot more harmful than Amélie, Bridget Jones, or Love Actually.
Right you are. What a lot of people forget when they talk about the crazy dutchman, is that we have the lowest rate of teen-pregnancies because of the liberal policy. Goes for drugs as well. Lowest count of harddrug users. I must say, there are limits to tolerance though. But this movie is a classic and the story comes from one of the most brilliant writers we have in The Netherlands. Sex is part of all ou lives and deserves the attention. Besides, the movie is not porn, the sex comes with the story.
All I can say is that countries who ban this movie or slap an X on it, R18 or some other pathetic tag, just need to get with it. We live in 2005. The age of liberty. Also, hildren become mature and knowledgable of things at much much earlier ages these days then the generations before them. Turks Fruit is A+ One of the, if not the best Dutch film of all-time.
Okay, I am from the US, but I agree that the film is excellent and one of the best films ever made. I would love to read the book some time, as well. I hear that the film deviates somewhat from the novel (well, I think that most films do) but that both are on equal levels of greatness. Hell, I even ordered the original soundtrack LP! The plot combined with the music is amazing. My favorite scene has to be the beach scene. I love when Olga asks Erik what he is thinking as they sit on the sand and he replies, "I am thinking of what you will look like in thirty years". That has to be one of the most beautiful scenes ever.
I actually watched the film with my grandmother and she loved it, as well. We were both haunted by it for days. Well, I still am. This is definately one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever seen. I hope that Hollywood NEVER tries to remake this one. The original is perfection.
im ashamed to tell you that i first saw this movie 3 days ago on RTL7...loved it..holland is a very nice country indeed...sh*tty weather..but me make a lot of good movies and we produce a lot of GREAT actors..!! (Rutger Hauer..Famke Janssen..so proud of them..!) ~~ Free Cable is the ultimate aphrodesiac.. ~~
i'm from belgium and over here it's really easy to go to a (in america) R-rated movie. we don't care about the whole age thing. a movie is a movie. suited for everyone. there are a lot of movie here with nudity that are rated for everyone.
I think "Spetters" is better. Same director (Verhoeven), also in Dutch, and also starring Hauer (albeit in a smaller role) but an AMAZING film. Funnily enough it is also a 12 in Holland and an 18 in the UK. There's less nudity in it but the sex is probably a little more graphic (including a gay blowjob and yes, it is erect). But this is not a film you see for the sex, it is an outstanding film about trying to make a better life for oneself, and about power and how we use it. A brilliant brilliant movie, better than "Turkish Delight" (Which is also brilliant).
From what I understand, in Holland, the film rating is determined by the film distributor rather than by an organisation (some would say "secretive draconian cabal") as in the United States. I've been to the Kijkwijzer website, and there is a straightforward checklist that a film company can use to determine what the age rating for the film will be.
"Amelie" was rated "AL" (Dutch equivalent of a G rating), while in the US it was rated "R".
Age rating systems sometimes are more about politics then about what is realistic. I mean in a recent study 84% of all 12-24 year olds had seen a porn movie (Inquiry in the Netherlands) but you'd slap on an 18+ rating just because Turkish Delight had some nudity in it? rediculous. Rules don't always follow facts and/or science, there's just to much politics and opinions involved.
America is 2 stuck up with the movie age. If you see a tit or somebody gets killed it goes up to 18+. Its a bunch of bs. At the age of 12 i was watching Porky's and it didn't f* me up.
So thank god i live in holland so i could enjoy Monique Van der Ven her lovely body when i was very young. God she was good looking at the time man !!
STFU it's 16 now over here as well because of people voting for the CDA. Vote some more for Christian parties our country is going to hell because of it, *beep*
This is so funny! In Holland they don't consider sex a bad thing to see for adolescent children. So they rated this movie with pretty graphic sex suitable for twelve years! I agree with that
that is exactly why it is the USA who dominates the world, and not Holland. mwahahaha.

And this is exactly why the USA has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy, suicide and homicide in the whole world.
I think it's pathetic that apparently it is okay for kids to see someone get shot or brutally murdered, but that they will die of shock if they see a boob. Damn people, it's where their first food comes from, it's not like childern have never seen those before and they will definetly not do them any harm!
I'm not saying that we should rate these movies with full on sex scenes for all ages, but at least it's realistic. No fake bodies and hysterical moans, plus, there's condoms and a clear reference to what happens when you don't use them (you end up getting married at some municipal wedding as a minor, getting a baby and leaking fluids all over the place). Over all I think our rating of 12+ (or 16+) is perfect for this movie, because that is the age when you will need to know all of this to make the right decisions in life and not end up on a underpaid 9 to 5 job with 5 kids and a husband who's cheating on you with someone who doesn't have all that pregnancy fat.
Sorry for the boldness, but being Dutch has taught me to state my opions, if I feel the need too.
Haha. I'm an American of Dutch descent and what you said here: "Sorry for the boldness, but being Dutch has taught me to state my opinions, if I feel the need too." is pretty much how I am to a T. I wonder if it's also from being Dutch
All the Dutch here (myself included) are super...monetarily conservative. A lot of the older generation hopped onto the religious hyper-conservative bandwagon socially also.
It's weird because I always feel like a liberal conservative which is extremely contradictive to the norm of US politics but I always need to argue with everyone, either because they're fiscally retarded or they're completely inept at intelligently confronting social issues.
Things may be changing, but when I was growing up, breastfeeding was considered dirty and shameful. Not a single drop of mother's milk went to its intended use in our family. Women would have been arrested for feeding a baby anywhere they could be seen. Americans were thoroughly convinced by food companies that breastfeeding was something only ignorant immigrants did and that formula was actually better for babies. With the lack of exposure in infancy, it's no wonder that people in the US are freaked out by boobs.
Wow! I didn't know that a country that considers itself 'civilized' and 'developed' could spread such drivel among its citizens. So in those days, even the US medical system was responsible for telling such lies to mothers about breastfeeding? Was it sheer ignorance or rather a perverse act of prudishness that accounts for these ridiculous tales, and for the damage it has done to millions of babies - in terms of an increasing risk to various diseases?
Even the "liberals" in the US demand censorship. Monique is "exploited" in a role that "objectifies" and "victimizes" all women, and surely Rutger's display of manhood reinforces "patriarchal" oppression.
"Even the "liberals" in the US demand censorship."
No the liberals ask for it and Hollywood gives them gladly.Small goverment=mpaa having the say of movieratings.
"Established in 1968, the voluntary movie rating system was born of a period of incredible social change in this country, when our society was opening up and embracing civil rights, women's rights, workers' rights and more. It is no coincidence that the expanding freedoms of our country and the birth of this cultural touchstone emerged hand in hand. From the early days of film censorship to a contemporary system committed to providing information and transparency about the content of films, the rating system remains a shining symbol of American artistic and creative freedom and a useful tool that maintains to this day the overwhelming approval of America's parents."
It is shining!
There are no 23 year old americans thinking girls always scream and deny gravity. There are no predators in every town, near every kindergarten and public park. There are no terrorist that think its fun to bomb a hospital because there is one medical procedure beyond their approval.
