I agree this must be a great film because for me it is an unforgettable film. I saw it once when it came out and recall how I was blown away. It is well plotted with good acting and production values. I found and read the book as well. Judging from this board, it has slipped under the radar. At least it is available on DVD so maybe it will get second life. It is available from NETFLIX as a rental and instant play.

Very good independent film from the early 70's. Definitely under-appreciated.

Agree this is one of those early 70s hidden gems that will probably always be unfairly shelved in the blaxpoitation section when it's really a very capable screen adaptation of a legendary street novel. Based on the strength of the performances and cinematography, Trick Baby really belongs more alongside Eddie Coyle and Pelham 123 ('74), i.e., gritty heist dramas. Sharp eyes will also enjoy picking out Ted Lange and Don Symington, later known as Isaac (from the Love Boat) and Annie Hall's father (in Annie Hall), respectively.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

reply

Had never heard of it til 3am nite before. (channel surfing, but watched a funny poker torny -- classic Phil H meltdown). Tivod this. Glad I did, will watch today.

Yes an underrated movie. Though I wish they would have gotten a black actor to play Mr. White Folks. Ron O'Neal would have done a great job as Mr. White Folks. Though the movie is saved by the great performance by Mel Stewart.

Very interesting and real life type of movie. It's on the Retroplex HD channel. It's like watching another version of the Sting. Love the hustling.

White Folks is based on a real white pimp named Pimpin Whitefolks. He is in the movie Pimps Up, Ho's Down, with Ice T, Bishop Don Juan and Mike Epps. Trick baby is based on Pimpin Whitefolks life.

reply

I dont think thats the same person

thats another guy, a pimp, who also took the nick name " white folks "

he probably saw this film/ read the book and took the name

he is too young to have been the same guy who was pimping in the 60s / 70s

I may be wrong, anyone know the whole story?

...and Vernee Watson, who was 18-ish at the time. She's never made it 'big' and shes in the C-list category. Her 145+ credits over the past 40 yrs suggest shes made a very comfortable living, and she's still acting. Most wont know the name, but, glance her pic and i bet you recognize her, and you've seen her in a few things, probably recently.

I agree with everything that has been said. This is an "A" list blaxploitation flick.Gritty ,tough, smart, well written, acted and produced.
It is cool to see the rough Philly streets from back in the day.
Overall a highly under-rated film in the genre-Cheers!

reply

I agree with you. This is a straight ahead film that doesn't belong under the genre "blaxploitation." This filmmaker wasn't looking to cash out by exploiting an audience, he looked to make a well-done film.

I thought this film was very good. Mel Stewart and Kiel Martin were excellent in the leads. Great use of the gritty Philly street locations, too.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

Was very lucky to score this used, and was very glad I made the gamble. Well-made in all respects, well-acted (Mel Stewart really is fantastic, and Kiel Martin is pretty solid too), and very well-plotted indeed. Seriously, how is this less well-known than SHAFT?

Just watched this tonite, had never heard of it-lots of fun and a great plot, thank you Bounce Channel:)
