Norway and Czech film archive will perform digital restoration

Digital restoration

With the financial and technical support from Norway and the Norwegian authorities the Czech film archive and the National Library in Mo i Rana, the film Tři oříšky pro Popelku will be digitalized, restored, and get modern image quality. Both Cinderella, Prince, Jurášek and Rozárka will be digital from next year. Even her stepmother and stepsister will come in brighter colors and sharper images.

The project is part of the EEA Agreement, where Norway provides support for several of the least wealthy EU member states to preserve these countries heritage. Norway has granted just under 7.5 million NOK for efforts to digitize older Czech films.

This is now my 4th year of seeing this at Jul (Christmas) time in Norway and I was very pleased and impressed with the quality of the digital restoration. The images were sharper and more colourful, less grainy (like 70s television), and seemed to even hold up to HD scrutiny on my big screen.

I know it is some kind of sacred holiday tradition here, but.... I personally would like to see it in it's original czech/german language with sub-titles (norwegian, english, or whatever). The single norwegian voiceover narrator kind of takes me out of it.

Just watched the digital restoration. It's wonderful.
