What's up with Gloria's accent?

I realize the actress Hildegarde Neil is English, but I don't think her character was supposed to be. For one, her parents a the beginning had American accents. Yet she retained an English dialect. WTF?

She was trying to sound snooty?

I think it's probably a cross between a kind of affected, wealthy dialect (think Beacon Hill) mixed with the effect of living in London for a prolonged time. I mean, look what that did to Madonna's accent!

That's definitely what I thought of, an awkward, affected Transatlantic accent a la Madonna

I like Madonna's accent. My wife is a New Yorker who has lived in the UK a couple of decades (I'm Irish and have lived here since the Seventies but kept my accent).

Occasionally my wife will say something like "Nott-ingham" or "Para-SEET-amol" and I'l say "Don't you mean Naaadingham and Parraseedamaal? She says she tempers her accent sometimes to make herself understood, which I admit I had to do at first too - no-one could understand a word I said when I first landed here so I had to slow down and just round off some rough edges,

I don't think it's the same as adopting an accent wholesale though, like the dad in Frasier (English) or Charlize Theron (South African) both of whom admit they assumed a US accent to further their career.

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!
