...that was the late Will Sampson as Injun Joe, especially with that jump from the courthouse window that Will would've performed himself. I'd have lost that bet though.

I was thinking the exact same thing! While watching "Tom Sawyer" I was thinking "this was shortly before he was in Cukoo's Nest".

I saw this movie when I was 10 in 1973. Hadn't seen it since until tonight on TCM, but the most indelible moment for me from this film was Injun Joe's spectacular leap from the courthouse window (I'd even forgot that it was a musical). Just seeing it again now, it's still a pretty impressive bit of stunt work. The stuntman must have dropped at least 20 or 25 feet in his jump out the window and he lands on the ground! Ow! Powerful moment in this film. Nice bit of editing for this sequence to maximize its impact. God bless the late Warren Oates. What a fun actor to watch.
