Thank You Dragon Dynasty!!!!

It's about time someone put out a good version of this and other great Shaw Brothers' movies. Thank You Dragon Dynasty!!!!!!!

This movie was released as King Boxer this past Tuesday along with 3 others: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The One-Armed Swordsman, & My Young Auntie. Search for and enjoy!

no doubt man, i didnt know five fingers of death was originally called king boxer (vise versa), so it threw me off. but once i knew it was the same title i picked it right up...

"It will always be Five Fingers of Death," Elvis Mitchell's closing statement on the commentary track with Quentin Tarantino (Nixonian villainy), and HK (Asian) cinema film scholar David Chute.

This movie surprised the hell out of me (I got the four new Dragon Dynasty releases of the Shaw Brother's classics). It is almost flawless in cinematography, directing, story, acting, fight sequences, emotional resonance, complexity, entertainment value, and as a sweet bonus two very beautiful Asian (I suspect Chinese) ladies who graced the screen as love interests (they did not have fight sequences, look to "My Young Auntie" for a beautiful fiesty lady who kicks major ass).

My seminal HK cinema (martial arts genre) movie viewing at 9yrs old was the "One Armed Swordsman". I loved it then, and it's still endearing today. Wang Yu still fills up the screen with "emotional content" if not fully authentic martial arts techniques. The showdown at the outdoor canteen is still very cool badass stuff, and a pefect time capsule for a ground breaking Hong Kong cinema film. While I have a special place in my heart for "One Armed Swordman," "King Boxer" aka Five Fingers of Death stole my heart with a super intelligent leap to a higher lever of auteur filmmaking.

awesome read man. i like hearing people embrace this genre not only for its sword play and martial art techniques, but for the "emotional content" (well put). i picked up the one armed swordsman today, i watched the interviews about how it was the first hong kong flick to bank over 1 million dollars, im going to watch it tomorrow. hey man, do you think i should pick up "my young auntie"?

killacam, definately check out My Young Auntie. Good story and humor and some awesome fights. Be on the look-out for Gordon Liu in a cameo(didn't even recognise him the first time).

Who says violence is not the answer?

reply

yeah man, im going to try and pick it up sometime this week. i still havent got a chance too. but thanks for recommending though dude...

reply

killacam, I am just getting back to read here.

Yes, for sure "My Young Auntie" is a cool flick. Just a heads up, it is a comedy, and if you appreciate "Kung Fu Hustle" you will appreciate the origin of a director affectionately having comic fun in the genre. The fight scenes are nicely choreographed, with an eye towards American musicals and not the Chinese opera traditions.

I have yet to see "Come Drink With Me." That would be higher on my list of classics to own. I am not disappointed with "My Young Auntie," but I could trade it for an equally high quality copy of "Come Drink With Me"
;)

hey man, you actually reminded me of how good "kung fu hustle", was today. i just got through watching it (its been a while). thanks for letting me know more about "my young auntie". i like to hear about martial arts films before i buy them, especially if they are in limited release. i still havent got around to getting it yet, but i probably will pick it up soon. but again man, thanks, i appreciate your input.

ive saw those woo films (been awhile since BT2). ill look for "i was a teenage zombie" though. its been difficult the last couple months to watch as many movies as i would like too. but ill check out pretty much anything abstract or exploitive.

reply

Abstract? Okay watch any of these

Eraserhead
Blue Velvet
El Topo (1970)
The Holy Mountain
Dead Or Alive 2 (Dir by Takashi Miike).
On the one above the 2nd and 3rd of the series are better than the first they are not related in any real way except for the same two main actors are in all the films.
WATCH "I WAS A TEENAGE ZOMBIE" Excellent B horror/comedy!
