That'll BeThe Day v Stardust

Hi folks,

Which of these films are better? Personally, I think they are both equally brilliant.

Well it's a long time since I have seen either of them but for me I think "That'll Be The Day" is a better film not least as it's got Ringo Starr in it, however they are both brilliant films.

Could they be adapted as a stage musical?

Having watched them both on ITV4 over the last couple of nights (after having seen neither for years) I have to say That'll Be The Day wins hands down. It's not a great film but it's a human story with plenty of character development and drama. Stardust on the other hand seems, for the first hour to be a non-stop montage of 60s story-of-rock-n-roll cliches (ok fair enough they may not have been cliches in 74) with almost no sustained dialogue. You get no sense of who McClaine is, where he has come from, what he thinks. The first moment of dramatic tension is his mother's funeral. They could have made so much more of that angle - Jim, in his new life, trying to come to terms with his past, what he's done, but it just isn't taken anywhere. Also in both films the original music sucks the big one - with the exception of Long Live Rock in TBTD, although that song would never have been written in the 50s. The "opera" is so bad it's hilarious. Also notice the 1965 pollwinners concert full of very long mullet-haired tight t-shirted 1974-looking extras.

Thank you for listening!

I think it's priced at £7.98 - this is the re-issued dvd package plus you also get the sequel, "Stardust" included - So, yes buy this one.

Just watched them both over the weekend having not seen them for years and for me the first film is better. It's got the downbeat drama style of my favourite sixties movies and David Essex plays the part superbly. The first hour of Stardust carries on in a similar vein; however I thought it got a bit silly in the last half hour and could have had a better ending. My marks were 8 and 6.

I don't mind depressing, there are a lot of 60s Britflicks that are depressing (A Taste of Honey, The L-Shaped Room, The Leather Boys, Look Back in Anger, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning) but I found Jim MacLaine's character to be really reprehensible. Basically, he's a selfish *beep* who uses people, male or female, to get what he wants and then leaves them in the garbage can. He wasn't kind or caring to anyone unless it would benefit him directly.

I wanted to like the movie because I enjoy most Britflicks (and I don't get tired of looking at the young and delicious David Essex, I was tickled at seeing a young Paul Nicholas and Robert Lindsay) but I just couldn't.

Sorry I bothered buying them.
