Any good?

Is this movie any good? I just saw that Ringo Starr and Keith Moon are both in it... WOW!

It's very good, a look at the early days of rock 'n' roll, ostensibly based on John Lennon's life.

It's really more David Essex's film than anyone else's though. Ringo is a strong supporting, but Keith Moon's role is pretty small -- as a (shocker) drummer.

I had mixed feelings about it. Ringo was amazing, a much better actor than I expected. The story seemed to drag on and on and on and on and on, and David Essex's character was a real a-hole. It really did seem to capture the feel of what it was like in England back then. I guess my only real "complaint," as it were, is that there really aren't a whole lot of story arcs. It mostly just follows a cute a-hole's life for a couple years.

"Stardust" (the 1974 sequel) seems to get to the core of the 'maturing' character of Jim Maclaine but it's his mishandling (and others mismanagement) of his fame and fortune which continues him on a downward 'immature' spiral. Whilst "That'll be the Day" sets up the character's early years of aspirations and development, "Stardust" presents the character with a massive challenge away from his 'home' setting. It's an intriguing journey which sometimes infuses its plot with the politics of the music industry.
