Why was Jack Hawkins dubbed by Charles Gray ?

Anybody know ?

From 1966 Hawkins had no voice because his larynx was removed (he had throat cancer). He continued to work but his voice was dubbed by Charles Gray and Robert Rietti.

...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.

I'm watching this on Netflix instant watch and the first thing that crossed my mind was, "Geez, Jack Hawkins sure sounds like Charles Gray in this film. I remember now that Gray was dubbing for him occasionally. This is the first film that I've actually heard the dubbing in.

I love to love my Lisa.
