A somewhat successful visual experiment

This sixty minute short is largely silent and I don't have a problem with that. An early Kiarostami effort, this slice-of-life drama largely depicts an orphaned boy going through the daily motions of his life and his subsequent attempt to get a job someplace. There's no sugarcoating and deliberate coloring to make any of it excessively "cute" (and on the other hand, there's no overtly bleak tone, threatening to turn it into an irritatingly sad affair), which is always good. It's just generally quiet and lets the visuals do most of the talking.

The child borrowing a suit for the "meeting" was also very reminiscent of A Wedding Suit... what this recurring feature exactly means isn't exactly clear but, for me, it's supposedly about the importance given to something as insignificant as clothing, the need to maintain appearances and deliberately present a more glorious picture, and maybe even to highlight the childish obsession to look "grown-up".

However, it does seem somewhat slight compared to his other early efforts and I can't quite decide why. Perhaps, a more involved narrative woulda helped. 7/10

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
