An overlooked treasure

Joanne Woodward was excellent in the role as a mother and wife undergoing a midlife crisis, and Sylvia Sydney and Martin Balsam gave superb supporting performances. This film has a very independent feel, and it's too bad it's been largely forgotten. The film's handling of the gay son was quirky (why the segment with the ballet dancer?), but appropriate to the tone of this film and well ahead of its time in 1973.

I think this was just one of Rita's crazy dreams, reflecting her stereotype of gay people. Just my opinion.

Reminded me of the episode in Six Feet Under when the mother passes by the guy leaving her gay son's back apartment and immediately imagines them in a lurid S&M scene. She then hoses him down with water under the excuse he's smoking on her property.
