great movie

I saw this movie for the first time last night after I taped it off of TCM. I thought it was a great story with wonderful acting. It is making me think more deeply about my own life at the moment. I'm on a Joanne Woodward kick right now and she has to be one of the very best actresses ever.

I agree. I think this movie is underrated and was ahead of it's time (in American cinema, at least). I was surprised that it was as good as it was, considering I never hear anyone talk about it.

I will watch ANYTHING that Joanne Woodward is in. I love her voice, intonation and the way she puts so much across in every performance. Thank God there have been roles where she has been given the chance to do this, not trying to hang on to 'babe' parts and offering us more insight into the real emotions and life turmoils that we all have to deal with as we age...without a face lift.
Three Faces Of Eve - "I ain't gonna bite ya.." Love that line!
Sybil - "I love YOU. Now the only thing that's holding you on that chair is the law of gravity".

Never fails.

I love this film. It is deep & philosophical. The juxtaposition of relationships: husband/wife, parent/child, mother/daughter, all very rich & deep. Also, great scenes of 1970s NY.

this film is fantastic and so sadly overlooked most so called film fans now a days don't even realize Joanne Woodward is still alive though she hasn't appeared on the big screen in 18 years. she may not have had a face lift but she did have a rhinoplasty[nose job} because she broke her nose horse riding and it never healed correctly. Maybe TCM will run it again as the director Gilbert Cates died yesterday

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

I'm the same way .. her voice just draws you in .. and what a beautiful woman she is ... It's a shame this movie is rated 6.6 ... it's much better than that ... Happy Holidays to you .

"A man that wouldn't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough".

In 1974 I was 14 yrs old viewing this film on its initial release. In the theatre while viewing it my fellow 14 yr old best friend and I were laughing and making fun of it for what we didn't understand at the time. I remember a man and his wife shooshing us from behind...4o years later upon viewing it I REALLY GET IT. Over the years I've viewed it about once per decade and the older I get the more I share many of the experiences displayed in the story. Just viewed it last night and at age 56 I'm no longer laughing but relating. Good film memory from my childhood..
