looks like it might have been...alright on its own

I have only seen the MST3k version of this movie, where it was re-titled as "Stranded in Space" and this is one of the few times where I was more interested in the movie being played than what Joel and the bots had to comment on in the foreground. "The Stranger" looks like it might have been an okay, low-key sci-fi flick. I thought it had a great cast, who did a fair job presenting themselves despite their hammy dialogue, and if you can suspend your disbelief like me, it could be enjoyable. But as far as I can tell, the movie's unavailable in its MST3K-free form, so this is merely theoretical.

Had a pretty nice premise.

I've actually found this to be true for a handfull of MST3K movies, particularly during their later years (Touch of Satan comes to mind).

I saw this MST episode for the first time last night, after reading about it in the MST episode guide. Frank C. called it the "lost episode" or something like that -- nobody remembers it, nobody cares about it, nobody wrote to Best Brains about it. It wasn't all that bad; for a TV movie it's actually on par with Sci-Fi Channel original productions. The premise is a bit simple-minded and unscientific, but the "movie" itself didn't strike me as an unmitigated stinker. I actually hopped onto IMDb today to look up Sharon Acker because I thought she was cute.

WOW! Finally found a good review of my TV Pilot -- 'THE KEEPER'! Well, at least a "kind review". Thank you, hsauertieg! And yes, after looking at a photo of Sharon on my wall, I agree, she was (and I'm sure, still is) quite cute. Thanks, gs.

CORRECTION! I meant to say... "Finally found a good review of my TV Pilot: 'THE STRANGER'. 'THE KEEPER' was a more recent movie of mine starring DENNIS HOPPER and ASIA ARGENTO. gs

This is one you wrote? Cool! I actually saw it when it first ran. I enjoyed it very much; I was disappointed when it wasn't picked up as a TV series. For what it's worth, I think it would've been really good. 😀

I think I may have watched this when it was broadcast, as a lot of it looked familiar. Then again, as the jokes point out, it looked like a lot of tv from the period, with a sci-fi/Orwellian premise.
