Thorn was a perfect jerk character

Found myself getting annoyed at his constant bullying of people and disrespecting them and their property. It's plausible the culture of living in desperate, overcrowded conditions may make people less polite or respectful, but no other character comes to mind. Upon reflection, while the film was far from perfect, the fact that I actually got mad makes me think this film and Heston did a great job at depicting a "real jerk." RIP Norm.

I think it was very smart to depict Heston's character that way. He's as much of a decent human being as most people can be in that future, certainly better than many of the people he runs up against. But he's also a product of his upbringing in that dystopian world, taking advantage of whatever little bit of power & authority he has, enjoying the perks of his position without ever really thinking about it, and trying to survive just like everyone else. His friendship with Sol is what's enabled him to hold onto at least a small portion of basic humanity in an increasingly inhumane world.

Point taken. For sure, Sol was his saving grace. Still a bully and jerk imo, as his motivations were creature comforts and not quite life or death.

he plays a cop, and investigator, and takes his job to seriously as many do

No denying.
