Dario Argento connection.

I consider Brian DePalma and Dario Argento to be the two greatest directors alive. And we all know that sometimes DePalma "borrows" certain elements from Argento's movies, such as the elevator scene in Dressed to Kill being similar to Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and the ending of Raising Cain lifted from Tenebre. Yet, in this case, I think Dario was definately inspired by Sisters.

I'm comparing murder in this movie to the opening murder in Deep Red. Both victims are men stabbed in the back with a large butcher knife, both show the stabbing motion through shadow on the wall, then the bloody knife is thrown to the ground in almost the exact same manner.

So what do you guys think? Did Argento do a bit of imitating? Or are these just coincidences?

... we will never know

It's definitely possible - we know for certain that Argento kept his eye on his US equivalents such as DePalma - Jessica Harper was cast in 'Suspiria' because Argento liked her so much in 'Phantom of the Paradise' for instance.

I think there's been a fair bit of mutual imitation between not just those directors, but all directors from different nations. Some cases may be a matter of 'great minds think alike', but too many similarities exist to discount them all on that basis alone.

Although De Palma is ever so often written off as a "fluffy" director, there´s a lot more to him than just the somewhat cheesy visual operatics. Now Argento, while also a fine visual stylist, has next to no substance to him whatsoever and unlike De Palma, he seems blissfully unaware of the hilarity and ridiculousness of some of his material. Also, De Palma is generally very good at directing actors while the acting (as well as the dialogue) in Argento is mostly mind-numbingly awful.

I'm sorry, I know I'm late on this reply, but I simply had to LOL at "mind-numbingly awful". Seriously?? Uh okay Roger Ebert, it's honestly not THAT bad, you just have too high standards when it comes to movies.

reply

High standards my ass. That's like saying one is a gourmet aficionado just because one doesn't eat garbage.

Lmao You're one stupid mötherfücker ain't ya? Thanks for the lols but I'm afraid that I don't and can't talk to bots like yourself. 😁

Well I'm not the sh-t devouring cultural omnivore pathologically incapable of exercising even the slightest critical thought regarding the stuff you're consuming. To you all films are of an equal quality - you're happy just as long as there's a colorful picture show flashing by so you can enjoy your munchies and sniff your glue.

i consider brian depalma and john carpenter.. i used to be argento fan till i saw his '' jenifer '' episode in masters of horror and am no longer a fan ..and i think he's a really disgusting person .
as to your question , well , brian de palma has being accused of ripping off in several occasions and that's something i really dislike p.s i know you don't mean it that way in your post .. however i havn't seen deep red ..i actualy downloaded it and was excited to see it . but lots of things changed after jenifer .

reply

Wow, really? Yes Jenifer was a terrible excuse for a movie from a man as gifted as Argento, but I wouldn't judge the rest of his work by that. Most of his stuff is really good!

Future posts such as these will affect you in the future!

reply

Jenifer really wasn't much worse than some of his other stuff either...

their movies are quite similar in atmosphere

so many movies, so little time

Coincidence. I think the common link here is Hitchcock. That's who they both try to imitate or equal in style, not each other.

I also thought of Hitch as the common link. In particular, Marnie might have a similar scene, if I recall correctly.
