Bummer ending or just bad director choice?

I thought the relationship between Reynolds and Cannon was pretty lousy. Their chemistry didn't set off any sparks for me, but at least we were expecting them to really connect at the end.

Well no. She just blows him off and leaves wordlessly. This may be a common personality blurb by some women in real life who don't explain their actions, but in a Burt Reynolds' movie?? Come on! This blows!

Yeah, Dyan Cannon's character turned out to be a real ice queen at the end of the film. Somewhat surprising, because I thought Ms. Cannon laughed way too much in the film just up to its conclusion.

I didn't get that from the last scene.

She gives him a half-smile before she turns & leaves.

Remember, she's grieving for her brother.

In any case, the protagonist, McCoy, has changed his attitude toward women and wants one in his life. If Alexis does dump him he can go to the bookstore girl for his "Hoffnung und Sorge."

What? I loved the ending!
