Where exactly does the chase start?

Exactly where in NYC does that chase start?

It appears to be in the 50's on the West Side. Way west, probably between 9th and 11th avenues. The majority of the chase takes place on the upper West Side, so it does not make sense that they would film any part of it on the Lower East Side.

The car wash, as Vito's funeral parlor, was in the Fordham section of the Bronx. The film jump cuts to a parking garage that was located in the West 40's in Manhattan. From there, the chase takes a fairly accurate route going the wrong way up 9th Avenue, then west on 49th St. to 10th Avenue, where it goes uptown to W78th Street, then turns east. That's where the school children are playing. From there, it's down Columbus Ave. for one block, then left around the Museum of Natural History east on 77th St. for one block to Central Park West; then north on CPW to 96th St. where the cars turn west and do all the hill jumps to Riverside Drive. North on Riverside Drive to The George Washington Bridge, into New Jersey.

Other posts go into the NJ/NY Parkway confusion.

This man has it dead on. He is right on every point. This is all you need to know about this chase scene, as far as actual streets are concerned. Nice work wrfarley.

Thanks, ram14182. That's what I get for being an NY cabbie for 20 years.

If you want to read something more detailed, go to THE FRENCH CONNECTION board and read my post, "Where they shot it." That post has links and everything.

Great job, farley. I'm watchin' 7-Ups on Fox Movie Channel right now and the chase scene will start soon. Now I'll be able to know what roads the cars are tearin' up.

Big props for the info and stay safe on the streets. kh

One correction (I believe): The car wash/parking garage scene looks like it was filmed in Brooklyn. As Scheider and his partner pull up, you can see the Williamsburgh tower in the background. It was most likely Atlantic Avenue. The car scene is not accurate. It was filmed all over the place.

There a Briarcliff Manor/Millwood exit sign towards the end of the chase. Within the last minute or so. That is in Westchester County, NY How are they in NJ?
