An Exceedingly Well-Cast Movie

Burt Lancaster is the biggest name in this film, but the overall cast is unusually good. The scenes with John Colicos and J.D. Cannon crackle with tough-guy energy; good ol' Baltar Colicos really steals the show in his scenes, particularly when he blackmails Scorpio into accepting the job of hunting down Cross. Other character actors like James Sikking, Melvin Stewart, and Shane Rimmer (why did they dub his voice with that of someone else?) add greatly to the film.

Those were still the days when actors knew how to act, and it shows whenever you see a film like this.

Also the location photography is supereb, particularly in Vienna. Did you catch the visual references to The Third Man?

reply

No, I missed them. Will have to see it again.

Unusual to comment on the merits of the cast, and name six names, and yet not one is that of Paul Scofield. Or Alain Delon, come to that. The cast couldn't save the film, though. So, exceedingly well-cast, yes.

Lots of good actors with lousy cipher charactes. Paul Scofield's the only one to stand out.

Had it on the DVR from this-TV and I had never seen it before. It was pretty interesting. There was a cast full of familiar faces. Good location work too.
