Did Paula really exist?

The more Johan talked about Paula, the more I questioned whether she really existed or was just an excuse for him to divorce Marianne. We never see her, and he winds up remarrying someone else.

Maybe it was easier for Johan to give Marianne the illusion that he found someone "better" than to admit he simply wanted out of the marriage. Maybe there were several Paulas, or maybe there was a Paul.

Any thoughts?

she existed b/c of the letter and Johan showed Paula's picture to Marianne.

The letter Paula sent was real, the film didn't give me the vibe that Johan would make her up
