Yet another movie about a dysfunctional relationship where

the man is a lousy husband, terrible father, incapable of feelings, emotions, compassion, loyalty, responsibility. This stereotype in art cinema has been going on for so long now it's getting quite frustrating.

Once again it's the man who cheats, the man who can't ever remember the daughter's birthday, hardly seems attached to the children, seems disinterested in the marriage.

Surely it can't ALWAYS be the man's fault? Women can be disloyal, irresponsible, unfaithful, indifferent too? Or is that sexist to say that?

Your wife cheated on you. Didn't she? Look, it's usually the man who cheats on or leaves the woman, so expect more of that in cinema than the other way around.

I don't think stereotyping is something Bergman does. Bergman portrays these 2 particular individuals and the what occurred in their marriage.

It seemed dead-on with respect to most failed relationships. Husband doesn't live up to wife's expectations. Wife uses sex as a weapon. She will perform in bed if the husband performs in life the way SHE wants. So what does the husband do? Becomes cold, unemotional, distant and gets it somewhere else since it's too much work getting it at home. I'd say this is how it goes 90% of the time (and it amazes me that women still think the "sex as a weapon" ploy is viable since all it does is drive even more of a wedge between husband and wife and has a huge failure rate.

Did you actually WATCH the film?
The wife was a major screw up. You think she was painted as the victim and the husband as the bad guy?
Then you weren't paying attention.
