Why is this movie so underrated unlike others at the time?

Easy Rider, Mid. Cowboy, Cuckoo's Nest, The Graduate and Scarecrow.

The common thread or thing all these movies of that era have in common are hard luck rebellious unique characters who go up against the establishment or system and lose.

The one thing they all don't have in common is that they are all well known except for Scarecrow.

Any ideas why SC is this unknown gem of a film?

I never heard of it until more recently.

I think the other films were bigger at the time of their release. I'm not sure how popular this movie was at the time. It's is a solid movie. I just watched it on the & enjoyed it. Great acting!

That's a very good question, considering that the lead performances in this movie were outstanding. For some reason the studio at the time did minimal marketing and a very limited release for it. I remember first seeing it as a kid on TV about two years after its release, and my family and I loved it then. The next day I talked to some friends at school and they liked it, too. So, I dunno -- here's a movie that pretty much I know who saw this film has really enjoyed it, yet it has strangely remained obscure.

I think you are right about the minimal of marketing and release.

TV channels repeat The Shawshank Redemption all the freaking time and that one has become a cult classic and yet Scarecrow is hardly heard of and showings of it do not make the TV listings.
Sad because I think it could have become a cult classic.

Damn I'm good.
