Uncut DVD

Can somebody give me a definitive answer as to which is the most complete version of Satanic Rites currently available on DVD. I know there are lots of crappy, cut public domain versions out there. But is the out of print version, released by Anchor Bay/Starz and selling on Amazon.com used for $1.98 and upwards the most complete, uncut version? Is it the UK cinema version as cut, or is it the original, uncut cinema version?

Help!

Thanks Master!

I will go ahead and buy the Anchor Bay DVD from Amazon.com.

Sorry to press you on this, but do you know whether this uncut Anchor Bay DVD is the fully uncut version, ie the version that Hammer originally made? Or is it the version released in UK cinemas, as cut by the BBFC?

Thanks for your help

Hi there Mate
I have read about the 90 minute Anchor Bay version which is supposed to totally uncut save a few seconds - I have checked their website and checked the Region 1 & 2 Anchor Bay Hammer versions and all are 87 mins running time.
All film books including Halliwells and the Guardian film guides all give the running time as 87 mins as do IMDB. I am becoming rather frustrated as I cannot find it anywhere. The 87 minute versions do show the nudity at the start and Valerie Van Ost being staked etc they may be trimmed but this elusive 90 minute version is no where to be found but no doubt I will keep searching.
So I take it that 87 mins would be after the BBFC got their scalpels on it if there is a 90 min version.
You could purchase a copy just to have one to watch and join the search for this elusive version as I have done Ha,ha.
Hope this helps

PS if you do come across it please let me know!!

Thanks mate. It sounds as though the Anchor Bay DVD is the most complete version available. Once I've watched it I'll report back, but I suspect that this will be the UK cinema version, as cut by the BBFC.

I'd say it's very likely the original, pre-BBFC uncut version no longer exists. This is the case with Scars of Dracula, for example. The annoying thing is that if the film were resubmitted to the BBFC today it would not be cut at all, apart from the one second shot of the stake going in to Valerie Van Ost's naked chest - as the BBFC classify this as "sexual violence", which is ridiculous when you compare it to genuinely nasty stuff like New York Ripper.

You would hope that there is an uncut foreign version of Satanic Rites knocking around somewhere that will one day be released on DVD. Let me know if you ever come across it!

Hi Mate

Yeah a huge pain and I agree with what you say about the violent slasher films on show today how can they possibly not sell an uncut Hammer horror? Its the same myself I am looking 2 movies at the minute Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell and Vampire Circus the copies I have are slightly cut the best Frankenstein cut is the anolis at 91 mins but the film is actually stated as being 99 mins in Halliwells film book and Anolis are looking 56 euro I can get a cut the same length from America - same cut with all the gore in for $20.00 but who knows what the print would be like they also have an 87 min Vampire Circus for $20.00 Hmmm I am tempted but I don't want lots of muddy colour and bad visuals
As mentioned in my past emails all my cuts of TSROD are 87 mins probobly the same as the Amazon version so if you have any bother getting a copy let me know and I could do you a 1st rate copy - anything for a fellow Hammer fan

Hi mate

I have the Anolis Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell and the out-of-print Carlton DVD of Vampire Circus. Pretty sure the Carlton is the most complete version of circus available on DVD. I could do you copies of these if you want them - like you said, anything for a fellow Hammer fan!

Email me on [email protected] if you're interested.

I have a fairly extensive collection of Hammer and Amicus movies on DVD, but I'm always looking to expand it - always with the most complete versions I can get, of course!

Cheers

Johnny

Reel 5 - The scene in which Murray plunges a stake repeatedly into Jane's body, and her accompanying screams, was considerably reduced. Reel 8 - The scene in which Murray drives the stake four times into the body of the Chinese woman was considerably reduced, with one plunge of the stake sufficing. Reel 9 - The electrocution of a man, and the accompanying screams was reduced. The work was classified for video in 1988 in the above pre-cut state. However, one further cut was required as follows - At 43.5 mins - Shot in which stake is seen plunged beneath naked breast of chained female vampire was removed

remember the stake under the bare breast of the former secretary in the basement scene but not some of the others although they were all most likely there since
