A great sequel to AD 1972

I thought this movie was areally well-written and executed sequel to Dracula AD 1972. It was great to see the hip detective once again team-up with Van Helsing. I think it's a much more interesting film than AD 1972, which offers a great fresh Dracula story, rather than rehashing the same old stuff.

I think part of what makes this film work better than its predecessor is that it doesn't get caught up in the era which it's set. We don't have people smoking dope and running around in bell-bottoms.

Yeah, good call. AD 1972 was trying a little too hard to appeal to the hipsters.

reply

Exactly. Enough of the cool-hip-jive-talk-lingo that was obviously written by 50 year olds.

reply

I respectfully disagree with my fellow posters: A.D. 1972 is far more enjoyable.

Despite the presence of both Lee and Cushing, this one was barely a Dracula film at all.

reply

Definitely. AD 1972 is a fun modern update to dracula. Yes the characters look like they're from scooby doo, but if you can overlook that it's actually a fairly solid Dracula movie. The music is super cool.

This movie on the other hand, its not that its particularly awful in any way, its just its so thoroughly uninteresting. Everything is just so poorly done and has such a low budget feel to it. Its sad to see Hammer let Dracula go out like that.

i agree now that you mention it, i also thought that movie tried too hard to appeal to that times youth. i was sure the dracula hanging around with youths was the last of the lee movies, it was so far removed from draculas usual setting as if they brought the character out after "the run" to interact with those modern kids, i think it takes a long time in both before dracula appears though. about the dvd double feature, i found it a big difference in elvira's commentary of the two, like the most (of all realeases) on werewolf and least on dracula, and i tell you when i first got the cover of the dvd it looked like something from the adult section, still that's nothing compared to her mrs. santa outfit.

the day after tomorrow,
the past where you found me,
far away from your frame of mind,
i see you in the day after tomorrow,
from dust you left behind,
in rust from travelled miles,
i'll see you from the past time,
through the wooden cracks and dark weed,
greet through the forgotten scenery,
lead me out of the frame and show,
to where the sun shines and wind blows,
somewhere far out in the day after tomorrow,
from the frame i'll raise from the dust and meet you halfway,
walk on cracks and rust to find this place,
enter the world within this frame,
take my brush and we can put news in yesterday,
take me out on that road,
to where colour glow and gras grow,
give the experience what it means you never know,
show me this day after tomorrow.

It's on The Paranormal Channel now! I quite like this film. Cheesey, but entertaining.

i believe they shoudlve ended with ad 72

Good to see suave Williams Franklin get a decent big screen outing. Pity he's so casually killed off halfway through.

I just watched these two movies as a double feature for the first time. I had seen each film before, but never back to back. I seem to enjoy "The Satanic Rites Of Dracula" more each time I see it, and this time it made "Dracula AD 1972" the stinker of the series!

reply

I watched it a couple of times last week. Maybe I need help. I can't quite work out why but I think it's the combination of apocalyptic storyline and lazy plotting that makes it a keeper.

My favourite being the head of intelligence discovering a sniper and failing to take cover. Instead, he stands full upright and peers around. Gets shot slo-mo over a car bonnet. Priceless.

Also, the Prince of Darkness (TM), who is fond of telling us that he has commanded nations, always looking befuddled and indecisive in an emergency and adopting a strategy of staying rooted to the spot. There's no flames anywhere near Jessica on the altar but he lets Murray cart Jessica away. It is only then he goes to the door and belows about how his revenge (spanning centuries) has just begun! I think your revenge just went out the door mate, but do carry on with the BAFTA bid.

"Oh, Van Helsing has just lept out of the window. Now why did he do that? I was so looking forward to killing him. Now, I'll just look for my wellies....."

reply

I think A.D. 1972 is better. Jessica is completely different in this one (not just the actress!) although the events of the previous film could've changed her views towards the occult.

I agree that A.D. 72 should've been the end of the series, because it says 'rest in final peace' at the end. Oops, lolz, it wasn't final..

"Of course it's me, who were you expecting?"

reply

I liked AD72 more , SRoD was too talky and preferred the 1st Jessica more .

reply

AD 72 is more the gimmick of Dracula in modern times. This film what truly makes Dracula a modern Vampire.

I watched Satanic Rites again tonight and have to say my tastes for the movie have grown favorably the more I watch it. A dark, atmospheric picture this is.

I'm one of the rare people who absolutely loves both Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula. The Hammer Dracula series is perhaps the best horror franchise of all time and there isn't a bad film in the whole series. A.D. 1972 and Satanic Rites are included. Each film is wonderful in it's own unique way and are some of the greatest classic horror movies of all time.

"The Satanic Rites of Dracula" was actually quite enjoyable, although the grimmer, grittier look compared to the earlier films took some getting used to. There were some nice innovative touches such as the suggestion that after being the Prince of Darkness for centuries Dracula was exhausted and and had a death wish. And I liked how the humble hawthorn bushes slowed Dracula down--it's fun in fiction when something seemingly innocuous ends up defeating the monster, such as the chicken pox in "War of the Worlds."

It's difficult to compare this film to Dracula A.D. 1972 since the tone is so different despite both being set in the modern era. I did prefer the more serious Jessica in "Th Satanic Rites of Dracula" because she was more considerate towards her grandfather--as played by Peter Cushing Van Helsing was so kindly and decent it irked me to see him being snubbed by his somewhat bratty granddaughter.

I remember watching Satanic on tv many years ago, but didn't know what the title of the film was. I quite liked the film though, so I decided I would buy it on dvd.
Because I didn't know the title of the film, only knew Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee were in it in modern london, I accidently bought Dracula AD72 by mistake instead.

Even though I bought AD72 by accident,i actually liked 72 more, and im glad I bought it.
