Do snakes really sound like that??

Just re-watched this on tonight's "Svengoolie"--haven't seen it since Mom dragged us to the drive-in (she was kinda clueless, but that's another story)--and I never realized how pathetic those snakes (and the subsequent snake-creatures) sounded. Do snakes really make those sounds? Especially in the very beginning, when the Dr. is selling Tim the Snake-Man to the carnie--I thought he had a dog or something in that crate, the way it was whining. I felt sorry for the poor things. 

You know, Burke, I don't know which species is worse. 
