Snakes were real, but...

Were their deaths in the movie real? When Harry, the pet, had his neck broken, it sounded all too real. Was there a boa killed for this movie. Also, the king cobra at the end with the gunshot... I doubt that one was real, but just want to make sure. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a snake lover, but would feel a wee bit guilty about enjoying something that required animal sacrifice. Anyone have any credible information about the safety of the animals on this set?

THANKS!

I just saw the end of it last night for the first time and I was wondering the exact same thing.

I saw the end for the first time the other night also, and think a few snakes, as well as a mongoose, may have been hurt during the making of this film.

The King Cobra, that was shot at the end of the film, was a rubber fake. I think they put a squib inside the model and blew it up from within. The editing goes straight from the Police shotgun to the King Cobra blowing apart. If you slow the film rate you can clearly see this.

Also a stand in, stunt man, for Strother is in shot as well and they would not use real firearms, especially a shotgun, with a stunt man in shot.

Just before this clip when the King is covering and raised above the dead body of Dr Stoner you can see a handlers foot distracting the attention of The King Cobra from the stunt mans body. Again this is much clearer if you slow the film rate down.

That wasn't a stunt man, that was a mannequin.

The snakes were real. The actors were fake!
