Scared Me, Creeped Me, and Gave Me Nightmares...

I was 7 years old when I first saw this on (The Movie Channel...it was known as the Star Channel when cable tv started back in 1979) and it gave me nightmares! In retrospect, it still creeps me out somewhat (am 33 now) because the giants, if I remember correctly, had red eyes and looked like blue/vein-ish aliens who had people as pets and so on. Did this movie bother/scare anyone else?

i was 3 years old when i first saw it..my father told me that and me and my sister 4 years old where very happy as many times as we whatched it because we couldn't really understand, but when my sister reached around 6-7 and started to make sense out of that movie she asked my dad never to show it to her again..she was really scared..but now,i'm 19 and she is 20 and we really enjoy watching it but still we both consider it as a quite scary film and certainly NOT for kids under 13..i can really give them nightmares..

Squicky, isn't that starnge how a cartoon can actually be considered 'scary'? I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought 'Fantastic Planet' as scary! Thanks for your input!

WOW, my parents are freaking stupid. I was another unfortunate person to have been shown this movie at a young age. I must have been around 5 or so when I first saw it. I remember only being scared by parts and I remember lots of cartoon nudity. I don't remember too much about the movie, but I remember some giant bat like thing that sucked people into it's mouth through a jelly straw or something........... I also remember the fights on the blue raptor like things. I remember feeling really sad or scared towards the end when those hockey puck like things were shooting out everywhere and the Aliens with the sniffing people on leashes or something were searching for the humans. I remembed feeling sad when the naked Statues were dancing together and they were all destroyed. I used to watch the movie a lot as a kid. When I got around 8 or 9 though, the movie was a bit too creepy, so I stopped. Havent seen it since : ( . I am 20 now, and I saw the DVD being advertised on TV, the initial shock of remembering the movie gave me mixed feelings, LOL. Would like to see it again though. Funny Stuff. Maybe now I might understand it..........

Now that I think back on it, I do remember the bat sucking people up through a weird straw or something! That movie sure messed me up there for a while! :) Very creepy!

Squicky, I can't remember (or know) of any other movie(s) that correlate to the genre of FP but if I come across some, I'll let ya know! In the meantime, I'm trying to find the DVD for FP to see if I can actually watch it without being creeped BIG TIME! Although I highly doubt it! :0)

The style of shading in the artwork is quite unique for a feature film, but you can still find the insane level of surrealism in René Laloux's other films and some Japanese films made around this time, like The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots (60s) Galaxy Express 999 (70s) and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (80s). Nausicaä and the much more recent Howl's Moving Castle have similarly unusual shading in their backgrounds, thought not on the characters. Like another poster, I saw this while very stoned when I was about 19 (late 70s) with a bunch of friends, it played in some second-run theater. One of my friends insisted we go, she was all excited and pumped up. Looking back, it was very creepy and trippy; I think (!) we were all "wow, man" throughout. Would definitely not watch again. Others in the category I would avoid for producing creepy and weirded-out feelings: Brazil, Eraserhead, The Rocking Horse Winner.

Anyone who shows this to a little kid should lose their parental rights. It was bad enough when I showed "Yellow Submarine" to my then-11-year-old son.

"Where are we going?"
"Planet 9!"
"When are we going?"
"Real soon!"

PS: I would add "The Lathe of Heaven" to that list

Just remembered, my dad showed this to me when I was four, and it basically turned me into an insomniac. It gave me nightmares, but now I just recently saw it, and it's not so scary. Okay, maybe it still is a bit eerie. :)

wow, i was just about to start a thread like this under the fantastic planet. *sigh* where do i begin.

my dad has been a HUGE b-movie and horror film fan since the 50's. while my mom was a caring dutch lady (like the mom on "the wonder year's") she didn't mind much what we were allowed to watch with my dad. i was born in 1979, my brother 1976. so that makes me, almost 27 now. being the son of a b-film buff (before it was popular to be one), i grew up reading his entire collection of "Famous Monsters of Film Land" magazines (as well as his "Mad Magazine" collection!), Creepy, Eerie, Vamprella, Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, etc. Heck, i saw Creepshow when it first came to video in 1984 when i was 4 years old.

however, my first encounter with Fantastic Planet appeared in later issue of "Famous Monsters of Film Land" when it had some glossy color pages to it. But it wasn't until my brother and I stayed up really late one night and caught the actual movie on the USA Network channel back in, oh i'll say 1985 or 1986.

It was shown on a movie/music show called "Night Flight" on the USA Network. this was one fu*ked up show. i mean, this is where i first saw many of my favorite movies that weren't available on VHS for the first time. like, Clockwork Orange, The Hitcher, VideoDrome, Fantastic Planet, the Wall, and any other aven'garde (sp?!) movie you can think of. this show came on probably like 1 or 2 am.

So, um, yeah...the strange music, plot, artwork, and voices really did a number to my dreams and nightmares.

there are few movies that i've EVER seen that i could consider being scary...and i've seen em' ALL (from the Ilsa series to schlock to b-movies to 1920's-1980's horror, to underground, to independents), and this is one of them...silly french.

check out my postings on the Creepshow (1&2) boards for more discussions. this is why i love IMDB, finally there is a haven for TRUE movie buffs for people like you and me. i've always been hard pressed to find other people that knew certain films the way my dad, brother, and I did...let alone understand what made them good or not.

Don't forget my dear boy I got the gun!

I had a French and Belgium girl in my class and they told me that they had seen the movie at an early age and were also really creeped out. I first saw the movie at 19 and I can definitely see why they were scared, it's so strange, I'm sure I would have been afraid too!

I saw this movie when it was in the theater and I was about ten years old. My mother took me and it really creeped me out to the point that I just looked it up thirty three years later to see what it was about. Over the years, my sister and I have talked about how creepy it was and how we haven't really seen anything like it since. I would somewhat like to watch it again - but I won't have my children watch it. No way!

reply

Yes it bothered me, yes it was creepy.
