wow, i was just about to start a thread like this under the fantastic planet. *sigh* where do i begin.
my dad has been a HUGE b-movie and horror film fan since the 50's. while my mom was a caring dutch lady (like the mom on "the wonder year's") she didn't mind much what we were allowed to watch with my dad. i was born in 1979, my brother 1976. so that makes me, almost 27 now. being the son of a b-film buff (before it was popular to be one), i grew up reading his entire collection of "Famous Monsters of Film Land" magazines (as well as his "Mad Magazine" collection!), Creepy, Eerie, Vamprella, Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, etc. Heck, i saw Creepshow when it first came to video in 1984 when i was 4 years old.
however, my first encounter with Fantastic Planet appeared in later issue of "Famous Monsters of Film Land" when it had some glossy color pages to it. But it wasn't until my brother and I stayed up really late one night and caught the actual movie on the USA Network channel back in, oh i'll say 1985 or 1986.
It was shown on a movie/music show called "Night Flight" on the USA Network. this was one fu*ked up show. i mean, this is where i first saw many of my favorite movies that weren't available on VHS for the first time. like, Clockwork Orange, The Hitcher, VideoDrome, Fantastic Planet, the Wall, and any other aven'garde (sp?!) movie you can think of. this show came on probably like 1 or 2 am.
So, um, yeah...the strange music, plot, artwork, and voices really did a number to my dreams and nightmares.
there are few movies that i've EVER seen that i could consider being scary...and i've seen em' ALL (from the Ilsa series to schlock to b-movies to 1920's-1980's horror, to underground, to independents), and this is one of them...silly french.
check out my postings on the Creepshow (1&2) boards for more discussions. this is why i love IMDB, finally there is a haven for TRUE movie buffs for people like you and me. i've always been hard pressed to find other people that knew certain films the way my dad, brother, and I did...let alone understand what made them good or not.
Don't forget my dear boy I got the gun!
