Modern lack of literacy is depressing...

Now this depresses me. My friend Suzie's mother censors mail for prisoners in a jail and apparently she has to read The Picture of Dorian Gray to make sure there's nothing the prisoners aren't allowed to see. Does no one read the classics anymore that her higher ups don't already know the Victorian novel is safe!?

Idiocracy is on the rise. Too much video gaming and porn.

Tell me about it. I just saw the 2009 film with Ben Barnes and while the look and the mood of the film is right, the language was mostly dumbed down.

I have not seen the 2009 film and it saddens me to think anyone would mess with Oscar Wilde's witty prose. This Dan Curtis version is absolute perfection.

I absolutely agree.

I just saw the 1945 version on the big screen at MOMI and while it is mostly true to Wilde's dialogue and prose Hurd Hatfield was too wooden. Shane Briant was the perfect Dorian.
