DVD release???

Isn't it about time this movie was released on DVD? I have a DVD-R version from a US site which is a good quality TV rip. But I'd rather have the studio original with extras, etc.

reply

Agreed! I was only 12 when it came out but at 43 still fondly remember that under-the-shirt ant shot. Would like to have the DVD myself.

BTW, interesting that "Phase IV" was on TV the other night, and the movie description was of THIS 1974 ant movie, and yet they instead aired the 2001 Dean Cain "Phase IV" movie (?)

Just order one from MST3k.

order it where? I really really want this movie

I was fortunate enough to be in an audience panel for this movie and gave it high marks. I've never forgotten how good it was and always make a point of catching it on TV. For those of you interested in a copy of it, it's available for $9.95 from:

http://retroflicks.com/shop/store/00012.html

That's the direct link. Also please note the date of this post if the price has changed.

Looks like it's no longer available.

That's the MST3K'd version. Have to take a pass.

I keep hoping that if TV movies like "The Norliss Tapes" and creepy thrillers like "The OTher" finally show up on DVD this will as well. I remember both the movie quite well and the novelization (which I read prior to seeing the movie which may have informed my opinion of the final film). I've always felt it's an unusual science fiction thriller and that the deliberate pacing (like that of "The Hellstrom Chronicles")made it much more fascinating and realistic in feel.

reply

yes, I want a proper DVD release as well

I've never been that big a fan of MST3K, to be honest. It really isn't very funny to begin with, IMHO, and when they trash a *good* movie, it's just annoying.

Hi there,

I'm sorry some of you feel that way about MST3K. I've been a big fan of the show ever since I first saw it back in 1995. I'm not sure which episode(s) you've seen, but I hope you give the show another chance in the future. You should also keep in mind that if it weren't for MST3K, a lot of people wouldn't know about movies like "Manos: The Hands of Fate" and "The Dead Talk Back". If you are looking for the out-of-print original version of Phase IV on DVD, there's a MST3K "tape trader" selling it here for six dollars:
http://www.mst3kvideos.com/extras.htm
You can also order the episode it was featured in (K09) for an additional six dollars, shipping included. I gotta warn you though, this episode is from their REALLY early days, back when they were still making the show for a local Minneapolis station called KTMA. They got much better after they started their own independent production company and revamped the series for The Comedy Channel (later Comedy Central and SCI-FI). You may still want to check it out though since it's Phase IV related and it's cheap.

You might be interested to know that there are several official MST3K DVD releases from Rhino that include the films with and without MST commentary.

These five episodes are available on single discs:
106- The Crawling Hand
209- The Hellcats
506- Eegah
513- The Brain That Wouldn't Die
515- The Wild World Of Batwoman

These four episodes are available as part of a four disc box set called
"The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection- Volume 1":
204- Catalina Caper
606- The Creeping Terror
607- Bloodlust
609- The Skydivers

After the series ended, head writer and former host Mike Nelson was asked to provide some humorous commentary tracks for some Legend Films DVD releases. These releases also include restored versions of the films without his commentary.

Reefer Madness
Carnival of Souls
Night of the Living Dead
House on Haunted Hill
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Little Shop of Horrors
Swing Parade

Good luck,

I will gladly pay for an official dvd release. Do any of the cult dvd companies ever read our posts ? If not they should do, we are the people who are willing to pay.

I want an original fully restored edition, not some 'orrible bootleg, but thanks for the offers. I found out recently that this film is in legal limbo, so there is little chance it will surface anytime soon, but hope springs eternal.

There is a very nice widescreen version available from:

www.zerodaydvd.com/

I can't imagine where they sourced this.

I just watched Phase IV for the first time in perhaps 20 years, and it is just as good as I remembered.

The Legend Films DVD is a strictly no-frills affair, but at least it's a nice widescreen presentation of the film.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!
