I'm pretty sure he was trying to get a reaction from the ants, as they were there to study what the ants were doing and how they communicated.

If your talking about the tall Ant created towers, they were using them as sun reflectors which would shine on the lab and intensify the already scorching heat of the desert. A kind of Ant technological attack seeing as they understood and built the towers all around the lab. And the characters talk about it as well. Haven't seen it in a while but I remember thats what they did.

I think he meant the initial anthills that were in the form of tall Easter island obelisks, Hobbs obliterates them all near the beginning of the experiment with a grenade launcher to try and get a reaction from the ants. He is later advised by his unseen superiors to try destroying one of them to get a reaction from the ants. It was wiping out these towers that initiated the siege on the camp and the attack on the farm.

In answer to the OP I would say that they were simply anthills that showed that these ants had intelligence of architecture and geometry, probably the first reason someone reported the phenomenon in the first place.
