original theatrical longer version

i saw this the week it opened in san francisco .... i remember the scene where slim pickens is shot and dies while bob sings knockin' on that old door...that scene originally seemed to go on and on and there was a slow motion scene of slim falling down in his dying .... that scene seems to be shorter and altho the flick can be slow at times and could use some cutting...that scene with that song shouldn't have been edited....anyone else remember it?

You've simply stored a faulty impression in your mind for all these years. Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" did play (with his vocal) in that sequence in the original theatrical version; however, Pickens sat looking first at the water, and then at wife Katy Jurado, but he never did actually die onscreen -- or even fall from his seated position, slow-motion or otherwise.

Not only did I see the picture on its opening day in Chicago (the first show, in fact), but since 1987 I've owned an original-release 16mm print of the 1973 theatrical edition. I hope that helps you trust my memory and testimony.

Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.
