why do they leave!? i checked the other topic but it goes off track a bit!

I think they led a nomadic lifestyle and went off every now and then, maybe returning later as they had nice beach huts ready for them.
The corrupt trader who was dealing with them and got whacked later, maybe the trading they did was because they were moving on and traded their pearls for items necessary for their journey.
I think the native chief looked like Iggy Pop

In the book they didn't leave.
Papillon did after 7 months.
And he got both the girl and her younger sister pregnant, but left before they were born.
