Song question...

What was the song played towards the beginning of the movie when Mose and Addie are driving away from their second bible con (when he sold to the deputy sheriff) and Addie says that he owes her $85.74? The song is on the radio and I was curious as to if anyone knew what it was. I found a list of fifteen songs from the movie soundtrack, but I am not sure which one this song is. If anyone knows, it would be greatly appreciated!

I watched again today, hadn't seen this movie in a long time, but I didn't know the song, sorry. I had hoped I would recognize it, but it just sounded like an instrumental jazz/swing tune.

reply

Thanks though. It wasn't one of the 15 songs on the original soundtrack either.

I'd love to know where you saw the list of the songs from the soundtrack. If it's online, could you give me the link? I've always wanted to hunt down the songs and the artists used. The end credits list the performers, but not the songs.

Jimmie Grier and his Orchestra (Donald Novis vocal) - "One Hour With You"
Victor Young and his Orchestra (with the Boswell Sisters) - "I Found A Million Dollar Baby"
Jimmie Grier and his Orchestra (Pinky Tomlin vocal) - "The Object Of My Affection"
Hoagy Carmichael and his Orchestra - "Georgia On My Mind"
Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra - "A Picture Of Me Without You"

Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra - "After You've Gone"
Enric Madridguera and his Hotel Biltmore Orchestra - "Let's Have Another Cup Of Coffee"

The only place I could find it was eBay so try hunting there!

Hello. I just watched Paper Moon again a few nights ago ... one of my all-time favorite movies ! I am also a long-time collector or pre-WWII 78 rpm records, and I immediately recognized the song you asked about in your August post. The name of the tune is "Mississippi Mud", and what is heard in the film at the point you describe is an excerpt of the 1928 version by Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, with Bix Beiderbecke on cornet. Have a free listen to it at redhotjazz.com/bands.html. (I have a different version by "Frankie Trumbauer And His Orchestra" [also with Bix], a smaller contingent of Whiteman musicians, with vocal by Bing Crosby. This latter is a somewhat more languorous version than the snippet you hear in the movie.)
I noticed that in the title listing you give for the soundtrack, this does not appear, and also that there are at least several songs or artists listed that weren't used in the movie. Not sure what was up with that - perhaps, in 1973, only forty-something years after their original issue, there were still problematic/expensive royalty issues or something with some of the recordings, and the anthologist was forced to substitute material.
I hope this helps. Regards, Dan.

Unfortunately this great soundtrack is only available on vinyl and not on CD. Funny this is I actually have the LP (somewhere) but no turntable, so I haven't listened to it in many many moons. I think the song is "Flirtation Walk." Even though Dick Powell was a vocalist, many of the 30's songs had very long intros. Hmmm, but don't take my word for it. It really has been awhile.

Yes, it was "Mississippi Mud." There is a difference between the soundtrack album and the actual music used in the movie. For example, Louisiana Governor Jimmie Davis sings "My Mary" on the soundtrack album, but in the movie he sings "Nobody's Darlin' But Mine."

Thanks everyone! That was it!

I recognized "Mississippi Mud" in "Paper Moon" only because, when I was about eight years old (in the late '70's), I had a Muppets LP where the Muppets play this song!

This is one of my favorite scenes. I love the way she wipes the smile off his face by stating what he owes her .... to the cent!
