Looks like a Coen Brothers film!

Rewatching this just now - it feels like a Coen Brothers film! The BW of Man Who Wasn't There, the con style tactics of most of their characters, the girl from True Grit, even the way it was shot. Strangely though, I imagine if the Coen brothers were to remake this, it would be nowhere near as good. They'd cast someone like George Clooney, who's self consciousness would distract from the sensitivity of the story.

You mean a Coen Brothers film looks like this. ;o)

reply

Exactly! I love the style of this kind of cinema, its a joy to watch, and surprisingly not many films can achieve that level.

Try Bogdanovich's 'Last Picture Show'-similar B/W cinematography and setting (slightly later time frame but in a place that changes little). Also see Soderbergh's 'King of the Hill'.

When I turned this on, I wasn't sure if I was watching Brad Pitt. He has a similar look and mannerisms to Ryan.

reply

I totally thought that too!

It's all in the jaw. And a bit of the eye squint.

reply

Maybe Ryan is Brad's Pa.

reply

They do have the same jaw. ;)

reply

Lot's of people got the same jaw.

I just rewatched "Paper Moon" and it kept reminding me of "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou." I definitely got the impression that "Paper Moon" was a strong influence on the Coen brothers when they made that.
