Unusual remark from Connery about this film

I remember about 8 or 9 years ago, Connery appeared with Mark Cousins on BBC's Scene by Scene.

The Offence was briefly mentioned. Cousins said 'The Offence was a great picture'

and Connery's response was:

'Yes, my whole family went to see that one'

I never really understood what he meant by this.

Was he making a joke that only his family went to see it as it turned out to be a disappoinment at the box-office?

Was he being ironic as The Offence is definitely not a family movie?

Was he referring to something else?

I'd be interested to hear what other people think.

reply

I don't know. Perhaps that it "was" so great a film that the entirety of his family went to see it, as opposed to only some family members of his. That's what I'd put my money on, or your first guess.

reply

I think he meant that only his family went to see it,it was a big flop at the box office after all.
I might be wrong but I guess that Connery regrets making the film since it was not valued at least at the time.

reply

I don't think Connery would regret making a film he believed in as he clearly did in this case.

Connery blamed the distributors to an extent.

I imagine most actors would only regret making a film if it turned out to be bad like his next film, Zardoz which was awful.

reply

I have two interviews with Sean Connery, in which he names this film as his favourite work of all. So I guess it was just a joke about the bad box-office results.

You may think that, I couldn't possibly comment

reply

I think he was definately making a joke about the film's very adult subject matter.

reply

I seem to have thought he has said somewhere "The man who would be king" was his favourite

reply

"Was he being ironic as The Offence is definitely not a family movie?"

Obviously. He plays a perverted sergeant with sexual obsessions, which is not a theme for a family movie.

No he was neither of those things, he was just a policeman who was having a nervous breakdown brought on by all the horrors he'd witnessed through his job and the abused girl was the final straw!

Yes, but not the paedophile rapist.

Uh, he's saying that his entire family went to see his movie.

He was clearly making a joke about how few people paid to see it, and also taking a jab at people who are so god damned stupid that 100x as many went to see 20 films of his that were nearly complete garbage.

This film is such an absolute masterpiece, and not only is it painstaking work to do something like this, but to get it done for a million bucks in thirty days is unthinkable!

After finishing a project like this, it has to be disheartening when four billion people immediately dismiss it out of hand, and more of them stayed in to watch Sonny and Cher that week.

He knows that most of the films he gets paid for are crap, and he knows that The Untouchables should be punishable by death, so it has to sting when the universe keeps pushing him to those projects just to keep on his career path.

None of the James Bond films are thought of as truly good film. You know that. He knows that.

In the 1970s he made a lot of films that critics liked but disappointed at the box office.
