Other classics not on DVD

Today it seems like almost every film is released on DVD. I'm curious what films havn't been released on DVD that should be. Thanks.

reply

This one, Let It Be, and Ladies & Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains

reply

Rolling Thunder, The Wild Life, The Brothers Karamazov and Under the Volcano; four I'd personally like to own!

reply

Good call on Under the Volcano! One of my favorites.

Here are some that I voted on at TurnerClassicMovies.com

-Last Summer
-The Friends of Eddie Coyle
-Wild Rovers
-92 in the Shade
-Dusty and Sweets McGee

reply

Looks like you're in luck Oliver-50. Under the Volcano is being released by Criterion in October!

Another movie I'd like to see released on dvd is Nightmare(1981) aka The Nightmare in a Damaged Brain. Not sure Criterion would touch that one.

reply

code red is releasing nightmare actually very soon along with another video nasty "human experiments" :D finally out on dvd uncut (hopfully haha)

reply

The Farmer (another one from Code Red), Wake in Fright, Rolling Thunder, The Devils directed by Ken Russell (official release), El Condor.

reply

Yes totally agree about Ken Russell's "The Devil's" - absolute tragedy - an amazing film - I only have the UK theatrical release on Video - about 1 and a half minutes cut - desparately need a decent DVD release.

reply

The Farmer is a movie that appears to not even exist anymore anywhere !!!!

I have tried to find it for years.

If you can, hook a brother up !!!

Another unfathomable DVD no show: WHEN YOU COMIN BACK RED RYDER?

reply

Check out The Farmer message board on IMDB. It's coming!

reply

WHEN YOU COMIN BACK RED RYDER with Marjoe Gortner is available at joesclassicmovies.com. I recently purchased a lost favorite "W.C.Fields and Me" and I saw Red Ryder available on their site. Check it out.

reply

Just letting you know that Wake in fright has been released, at least in Australia.

Television : The people medium, for medium people.

reply

The Criterion Collection will release Under The Volcano in October 2007!

reply

...and WARNERS will release O LUCKY MAN in October (23/10/2007).

reply

The African Queen, The Magnificent Ambersons, Journey Into Fear, The Blue Dahlia, The Glass Key, Chimes at Midnight, My Dinner With Andre (I don't count the crappy Fox/Lorber release that's now OOP), Marlowe, most of Laurel and Hardy's films, Greed, The Big Parade, Show People, The Crowd, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Last Remake of Beau Geste, It's in the Bag!, The Wrong Box, Whistling in the Dark, all of W.C. Fields' silent films, Welcome Danger, Professor Beware, almost all of Wheeler & Woolsey films, The Memory of Justice, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Brother Orchid, Keeper of the Flame, Hands Up!, Starting Over, Orson Welles' Macbeth, Farewell, My Lovely, Green Mansions, The Immortal Story, Ministry of Fear, Stranger on the Third Floor, Song of the South and probably many more that I am forgetting right now.

reply

THE FABULOUS STAINS!!! I have a bootleg copy I hate.

HOW I WON THE WAR. It almost came out...Amazon was taking pre-orders...then nothing. Ditto for ERIK THE VIKING. I have cruddy old VHS copies on my shelf. I love those movies. Pfft.

Richard Lester's The Bedsitting Room

Many of Luis Bunuel's best - Simon of the Desert, Nazarin, Exterminating Angel, Land Without Bread (aka Las Hurdes), The River and Death, Los Olvidados, Death in the Garden (AKA Diamond Hunters) and more

Godard's Pierrot Le Fou and Gai Savoir

Entr'acte (full length with Erik Satie soundtrack)

The complete works of Oskar Fischinger

Crispin Glover's What Is It? (I got to see a screening of this over 2 years ago in Austin, it was finished then, where is it?

At least Cook & Moore's Bedazzled finally came out this year! :) I'm also thrilled to see Michael Palin's incredible travelogues out this year, well-packaged and looking gorgeous.

(PS, I'm talking about USA/Region 1 releases)

Fun thread!

The 1986 Australian film "Bliss." It's excellent. I had to by an Australian DVD, and hack my player to make it region free. I'll also second the nomination of Ken Russell's "The Devils."

There have been a few recent releases of things that should have been released long ago, "Performance," with Mick Jagger, and Jodorosky's "El Topo."

reply

another bunch from the 70's are missing. MANDINGO, LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR,TEN RILLINGTON PLACE, THE MUSIC LOVERS,ZABRISKIE POINT,TRISTANA, THE SICILIAN CLAN. SO MUCH GARBAGE IS RELEASED BUT LOTS OF OLDIES ARE TOTALLY IGNORED. ESPECIALLY FROM PARAMOUNT HOME VIDEO.

reply

Mandingo is on DVD.

James Mason using slave boys as foot stools - classic

reply

I forgot to mention MTV's "The State".

Some episodes are available for download through iTunes but the music has been completely changed. :(

I maintain a listmania list at amazon on this topic. My list is restricted to films I want released on DVD Region 1, so some of these are available in other regions. And some of these are guilty pleasures and personal faves that might not really be considered classics but hey, it's my list, right? :)

arizona dream
big time (tom waits concert film)
boy friend
cold fever
the decline of western civilization
dr. black and mr. hyde
gizmo!
highway patrolman
janis (janis joplin doc)
justine (1969)
kafka (the full soderbergh vision)
last days of planet earth (the full unedited version)
let it be
made in heaven
multiple maniacs
night on earth
pretty maids all in a row
roadracers
rolling thunder
santa sangre
savage seven
song of the south
the state of things
the strawberry statement
twilight zone the movie

I would also add los enchildas (mitch hedberg film) and Los Angeles Plays Itself. (i can dream, can't i?)

A couple big ones that recently got released, finally: whose life is it anyway, straight time, sweet movie, reds.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

reply

Night On Earth will be out tomorrow.

reply

Really? Awesome! I love knocking flicks off that list.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

reply

Yup, Night on Earth is out now. :)

So is Performance. :) :)

Big Time isn't out??? That's mad.

I also agree that Gizmo! needs to be on dvd.

I'd also like to add - those Subgenius VHS releases, all that cool video collage. (There is a Subgenius dvd, but it's mostly lame '90s digital animations and such.)

O Lucky Man is coming soon!!!!! Joy.

Also - as an American who digs British tv - I am dying for Jam, The Day Today, Stuff, Smack The Pony, The Fast Show, The Comic Strip Presents, Kevin Turvey, and more...but at least we got Big Train, Nighty Night, Alan Partridge, The New Statesman, and Fry & Laurie! Also, a BIG pet peeve of mine was that AbFab's last special "White Box" was never released, and it is coming out this October.

Huzzah! It's fun to live in the future.

It's been a bitch for Orson Welles, eh?

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

reply

Simply awesome. I found out about a week ago that Blade Runner was getting its long awaited Special Edition DVDs, but now Kubrick's films are getting Special Editions along and O Lucky Man is going to be released too! This is a good year.

reply

Hellzapoppin' (one of the funniest comedies ever), Shoot the Moon (the best performances both Diane Keaton and Albert Finney have given so far), Far From Vietnam, and one of Ingmar Bergman's most underrated films The Touch (One of only two he filmed in English--and the better of the two--with Eliott Gould, Max von Sydow and Bibi Anderson, the latter two in their final roles for Bergman.)

reply

Just saw that O Lucky Man! is coming out on a 2-disk DVD on Oct. 23, 2007.

reply

Other films not available on DVD that I would like to watch are: The Black Windmill, The Ipcress File, Rolling Thunder, and Telefon. Has anybody heard anything about these films being released on DVD?

reply

Black Windmill is on Region 2 DVD here in the UK.

reply

Most of Ken Russells FILMS OF 70'S !

Action is the enemy of thought

reply

Strongly agreed, though one can find Lisztomania, the Music Lovers, and The Boyfriend with a little looking on the internet. The one that should really be out is THE DEVILS, as well as SAVAGE MESSIAH, which I've never seen. MAHLER was once available, but it was inferior and now out-of-print. VALENTINO isn't supposed to be very good, but I'd sure like to see it and own it. Most?! ;0)Well, Tommy is available, and in a good Superbit edition, I love it.

reply

I'll chime in with a vote for "The Strawberry Statement" and "Getting Straight" (two American hippie protest era movies; nice time capsules even if dated). And Zabriskie Point too.

reply

I'd like to see Bill Forsyth's "Comfort and Joy" which I believe has received a Region 2 release, but has not yet arrived on Region 1.

reply

Once again....Wake in Fright!!

reply

'The Landlord' by Hal Ashby
'Multiple Maniacs' by John Waters

'Salvador Dalí: Soft Self-Portrait'
'Burroughs' (1983)
'Underground' (1975 - by Haskell Wexler)

I forgot about A Soft Self-Portrait! My VHS is almost worn out. Another great documentary that I only have on old VHS is Germany:DADA.

I'm shocked that Multiple Maniacs isn't out, what with all this Hairspray revival going on.

Skidoo (it's awful but it's kind of fascinating)

Waters has said that Mondo Trasho will never be on DVD because obtaining the music rights would be outrageously expensive. Maybe the same applies to Maniacs.

Do you have a way to digitally capture VHS tape?

reply

VHS to dvd - nope, not yet, though I'm thinking of investing in something. I have a Mac which I use to make cds from my old LPs and cassettes, but my huge and wonderful VHS collection is still sitting here, s-l-o-w-l-y degenerating.

Any advice you might have on the best equipment for the job would be HIGHLY appreciated! I've been taping and trading rare stuff for over a decade, and I'm eager to finally digitalize all the unavailable stuff...especially the things that will never ever come out, like Beatles interviews and early SCTV episodes and whatnot.

All it would take is a Video capture card for your Mac and some software.

I've done a lot of VHS>DVD transfers, using my SVHS deck and a DVD recorder, with a 160gb HDD. They look at least as good as the originals, and usually just a bit better, less jitter, and sharper colors.

THANK YOU!

Berlin Alexanderplatz!!!!! Finally.Would love to see Zabriskie Point on a big screen. We all know its not Antonioni's best but is visually magnificent.Apparantly Disney will release Song of the South uncut.Hmmmm interesting.

reply

I agree we need Zabriske Point on DVD. Also Night Moves starring Gene Hackman and directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde).

Surprised these haven't been mentioned:

Robert Altman's Brewster McCloud - one of the great bizarre gems of the 70s

Freebie and the Bean with alan arkin and peter falk

and i gotta repeat some other people and say release Rolling Thunder on DVD!!!! Hell, you'd think Tarantino would've gotten it on DVD somehow by now.

Between Two Worlds (incidentally featuring Erich Wolfgang Korngold's favourite among his many film scores)

The Night We Got The Bird (classic Brian Rix farce)

French Dressing (Ken Russell's first ever feature film, shot in Herne Bay, Kent, in 1963 with James Booth, Bryan Pringle, Marisa Mell, TW3 regular Roy Kinnear and the lovely but obscure starlet Alita Naughton)

The Jokers (Michael Winner)

I'll Never Forget What's'isname (Michael Winner)

I Start Counting

The Bliss of Mrs Blossom

Nothing But The Best (an amazing snapshop of early-60s just pre-"swinging" London (like French Dressing, shot in 1963), with a large input from members of the "satire boom" (Millicent Martin, Bernard Levin, Willie Rushton - all TW3 regulars), and in colour too!)

Quest For Love (the cinematic expansion - and, frankly, improvement - of John Wyndham's sketchy but intriguing short story) starring Joan Collins and Tom Bell.

reply

Can anybody in Canada please release The Reincarnate on DVD?

reply

A series of Westerns starring Randolph Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher:

Seven Men From Now(1956), The Tall T(1957), Decision at Sundown(1957), Buchanan Rides Alone(1958), Ride Lonesome(1959) and Comanche Station(1960).

A boxed set please.
