Miracle On 34th Street 1973 Edition

I would really like to get a copy of this movie either on video or if it would be shown on Tv and I knew when then I could tape it. I don't think it has been released on video- I know that both the 1947 and 1994 versions are available on video but it is the 1973 version that I watched every year on Tv as a young girl that I would like. Does any one know if it is possible to obtain a copy of it from a television station that has it in its archives? Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions. Thankyou [email protected]

I totally agree with you. I too wish this one would come out on DVD. I thought
Sebastion Cabot did a wonderful job and so did the little girl who played Susan.
It airs usually every holiday season but it only airs once so if you blink you miss it. I believe it aired on the family channel the last time it aired. I taped it years ago and I still have the tape. I need it on DVD the tape is showing it's age! If anyone has any info as to whether it will ever get a home video release, please post here!

Spike: Yeah, I could do that, but I'm paralyzed with not caring very much.

The 1973 version was utterly horrible. I thank God that it isn't even being shown on TV. It looked like they filmed it all in one day. Tragic.

reply

Horrible? I disagree. It's sweet, and to many of us, it is part of the Christmas traditions of our past. Without videos or cable TV, this is the only Miracle on 34th Street that we knew. Someday you'll be nostalgic for something that future generations think is hokey, don't worry.

The 47 version is nearly 3 decades older, and not generally thought of as "hokey".

Plenty of 70s films, like Star Wars, The Exorcist, and Mean Streets have survived extremely well and are embraced by younger generations.

The 70s MO34thS is hokey because, well, it's hokey. Not because it's from the 70s or has anything to do with "future generations" thinking older things are automatically hokey.

I have been looking for this movie for years, I too enjoyed it as a child and just don't get the joy from the other versions as I do from this one. I have not been able to catch it on TV since i begin recording things. If any one would be willing to loan a copy so I could record it I would be very thankful.

If anybody could find a copy on VHS, we could run DVD copies for all of us!!! It seems a few die-hards here on IMDB.com would love it!

reply

I have the 1973 on VHS. I recorded it from TV in around 1990 or so.

reply

Chatter163, I must have taped it when you did. Lol! That's about when I taped mine. It was on the USA Network.

I would love a copy of this also! It is the "definitive" version for my wife, who grew up watching it as a child. Every year she asks me for it but I can't find it anywhere.

I am willing to pay $20 in any format, even VHS! Please email me at [email protected].

Thank you!!

This 1973 tv version with Sebastian Cabot will be shown on The Fox Channel this Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 at 2:00pm New York Time. No commercials! I will definitely be recording it on DVD-R. It is only on once this month according to my Satellite Guide. Enjoy, All.

It will be shown again this year on FMC on the 26th at 2 pm, the 29th at 3 pm, and the 30th at 12:30 am. I think I will tape it as many times as I can. I know others who want this version. Had to look it up on TV-Now under Roddy McDowell, who played the psychiatrist.
