Can somebody explain the significance of the Libyan (?) guy at the beginning of the film? He seems to follow Martha around for a while and is played by El Hedi ben Salem, who appeared as Ali in Fassbinder's 'Fear Eats the Soul' which was also released in 1974 (same year as for Martha).

Same actor appears in "Fox and his Friends." I believe he was Fassbinder's boyfriend at the time. Still, his exact role in "Martha" is unclear. (Apparently, he appeared in quite a few Fassbinder films).
