I completely agree with the o.p. I think this is one beautiful film, definitely in my top 5 of all time. I actually found Leaud's character very loveable, in fact. I know that he is self-absorbed but that makes him all the more charming (for me at least). I really don't understand all the criticism towards his character; of course he is the perfect representation of the narcisstic intellectual who loves to hear himself talk; nevertheless, he is very interesting to listen to and much of what he says is spot on. I saw him as a truly disillusioned person who cannot buy into the "machine" of modern society. I can perfectly relate to that. I can relate to him and also to Veronika. Alexandre is putting on an act throughout the film, but it is endearing because it is so obvious. When Veronika shatters this barrier or mask that he has raised, it is all the more shocking and even painful for him. She is able to reach him: he who had previously made efforts to keep an emotional distance. On another note, I'd be quite interested to know how closely J.P. Leaud resembles the character of Alexandre. He is really wonderful in this film, and I know that Leaud puts alot of himself into his characters; I believe he has even mentioned this in an interview.
I don't want realism. I want magic!
