DVD plans?

Anyone know if there are plans for a DVD of this movie?

reply

haven't heard anything about a dvd plan. i know one thing for sure, this film is out of print and was probably only available on VHS. you can't buy it on amazon or anywhere else, unless you buy it used somewhere.

i never saw this film, but seeing the reputation it has, i think a re-release is certainly due. i would love it if criterion released this....even though it would cost a lot of money to buy.

anyone seen the japanese dvd's? It's also outrageously expensive

i wonder what's the quality of the transfer since there's nothing available in France, probably a video tape released long ago in the 80's...

i also wonder how the japanese managed to release a dvd, since there's plan in France to do so... Eustache, i guess for copyrights reasons, is unfairly absent from video shelves

reply

i received my japanese dvd and can testify that it just a transfer of an old vhs on dvd, no digitally transfered

i guess there must be copyrights problems...

anyway, it's better that habving nothing!

I want this movie on DVD also. It's one of me faves. Is there someplace we can all write and get them to move on it?

I love haloumi cheese

reply

i guess you could write to UNIFRANCE which has a database for all french film rights

reply

Artificial Eye in the UK sell it on video so I guess if it's realeased on DVD there one day it'll be by them.

I emailed them just yesterday and they replied,

"We would like to, but it looks unlikely at the moment
Sorry to be so vague"

Question regarding the japanese dvd: are the subtitles removable? I am French, so no need for having those strange drawings on the image...
Thanx in advance for the answer.

reply

In France there will soon be released a Eustache boxset, which includes this film. English subtitles are possible but not certain.

are you sure?
what is your source and the editor?

if that's true that's really great news

I read this on another forum in late December. The poster wrote to Boris Eustache, son of Jean:

(...)I've thus far tried hard to be able to find Eustache films, i could watch most of them through pricey Japanese DVD editions by Kinokuniya.

If my little French didn't mislead me, you say in your blog that an Euctache boxset will be issued in 2006. Can you please elaborate on this?

I'm looking forward to hearing any news on this subject. (...)

Best Regards,

To which Boris replied:

Hi,

Yes, I have the project to edit all Jean Eustache's film in a DVD box in 2006.
I dont know yet if I will have enough money to propose subtitles in this edition.
If the DVD propose subtitles, I will let you know.

Thanks.
Boris Eustache.

Unfortunately no plans, as long as the current copyright holder is still alive (though he pretends not to block such a release).
But feel free to download La Maman et la putain; the copyright holder does not mind:

je ne suis pas gêné par le fait qu’il circule sur internet
(I don't mind it being available on the internet).

From time to time, rumors that a DVD is about to be made circulate, so that the copyright holder gets some media attention. But if he were to authorize the distribution of his father's work, nobody would pay any further attention to him. 
