I just rented the DVD version and I thought the film was pretty good. Bonus feature on the DVD included the documentary of "The Mack" called "Mackin' Ain't Easy" which was a lot better than the film itself. Included were interviews with the film's director, producer and stars Max Julien, Don Gordon, Dick Anthony Williams, Annazette Chase and singer Willie Hutch as they appear today. The Hughes Brothers were also part of the interview. Some of the cast members talked about how Richard Pryor was late to the movie set and often difficult to work with since he spent most of his time getting f---ed up on drugs. It was interesting seeing actual footage of the Black Panther party and the Oakland neighborhood in 1972. The documentary also included talks on the demise of real life pimp Frank Ward who was shot to death before the film premiered in 1973. If you are interested in this type of film, I highly recommend this DVD version of "The Mack" (at least for the documentary). I learned a lot more of this film due to the documentary. By the way, the commentary of the film isn't bad either if you don't mind some of the stars, the director and producer talking during the feature film.

I saw the tape version today in my high school film class.

Note that this is a sort of private, alternative school (but still part of the district so it's free to attend), we were watching it alongside In The Heat of the Night as a sort of racism bit, mostly whites vs blacks since there are a lot of movies to choose from there.

I thought, base value (guy goes to jail, gets out, becomes a pimp and works his way up), it was a pretty darn good movie.

ive seen it. its alright... it wasnt as good as i had expected. it had a good cast (richard pryor is a pimp in this one). if you like these kinds of movies (blaxploitation) i suggest superfly. now theres a solid movie!

reply

Superfly is KOOL but not as GREAT as The Mack!
Max Julien is just too fly with his role as "Goldie"

I love "The Mack"! I watch it everyday (yes I admit
it's in my VCR and I watch it all the time)

Max is such an inspiration and I will star in
movies with him soon!

He's a gem and I feel connected to his wonderful spirit!

I just purchased it on DVD but I haven't viewed it yet.

Best,
Miss. T

btw, "The Mack" is not your ordinary "Pimp" movie;
YOU must read between the lines and learn/enjoy
the story behind the story!
