I thought Marina was more beautiful than Ariel. It's not because I don't like Ariel but Marina definitely is a very beautiful character, despite being an anime character and somewhat younger in appearance. I wish Marina had more recognition compared to Ariel.

Marina really has a quiet beauty about her, whereas Ariel is strikingly pretty because of her red hair. I grew up on the Disney version, only seeing the anime version when I was at my grandma's house, which was a few times a year. Only now after rewatching both versions have I decided that the anime version is my favorite. Ariel is too teenager-ish for me. While that is Disney's interpretation of the story and is certainly a way to make it accessible to modern audiences, she's too whiney. I like Ariel, but I don't love her like I did when I was a kid. Now Marina actually shows truly sympathetic emotions: She loves her family and friends very much, and shows that, but ultimately her love for the prince wins out. You can see the anguish there, though. What gets me is watching her transform from this sweet happy girl at the start of the film to a heartbroken but mature woman by the end. It's such brilliant characterization. Ariel doesn't really change much. That's my opinion. =)
