The Suspicious Cat

Okay, I'm probably way off here, but since this is one of my #1 favorite movies, I have to see if anyone else has the same thought.
I understand the cat at the beginning, the one that attacks Florence, the dead one in the shower. It's the one at the very end that I keep thinking about. We hear some spirit say "Belasco" then, Ben and Ann start out the gate outside. I swear it looks like Ben stops for a couple of seconds, looks at the cat sitting there, then looks at Ann, and they proceed through it. I think Belasco's spirit somehow just moved into the cat, especially since he "leaves" the house, right? And that Ben has the same idea....????

thought I'd reply since I've read the book, even though haven't seen the movie yet. in the book, when ben and edith get rid of belasco I understood him to be gone for good, no other life in some cat. in fact, the cat that attacked florence in the book was sent back to the town after that incident by lionel so I don't really know where this one is from. since richard matheson wrote the book and the screenplay for this movie, I assume it pretty much follows the book and belasco is gone. I might be wrong, however, since I haven't yet seen it and perhaps matheson thought it would be a sick twist to let belasco live on in a cat (especially since he killed one as a kid to see it come back for another one of its nine lives). and it really would be sick to have belasco pop up again...

Is Edith Lionel's wife in the book? I'm not certain if the book killed off Miss Tanner or Ann - the wife. Now I KNOW I'm going to have to get the book. Sounds too good to miss! Thanks for taking the time to answer. Would love to hear your opinion of the book v. movie if you ever see it.
