My only reason for even suggesting someone younger, is that when Barrett is being told Florence Tanner would be among those joining him at the house, he responds with something like "She's only a chid" I don't even know for sure if the book says anything like that. Reguardless, we agree Rachel would be great for the part.

well, after looking at all the others...
Lionel - Charles Dance
Edith/Ann - Thora Birch (I always pictured her being pretty young, even though in the book I think she's in her late 30's)
Florence - Rosamund Pike or Sienna Miller (maybe... she's kind of how I thought Florence looked)
Ben - Roddy McDowall (he looked like I imagined Ben, anyway. I can't think of anyone more modern to play him.)
Belasco - Christopher Lee, although I think he's kinda tall...
and in the remake they should keep those scenes they cut from this one!
Who else could possibly top the performance done by the late and great Roddy McDowall??

Christopher Eccleston could portray Ben Fischer well, though he might not be able to top Roddy McDowall's portrayal, he is capable of equaling him.

The problem with Eccleston is that he would probably pull out of the film part way through "Not wanting to be typecast....."
Perhaps they could ask David Tennant when he's free?!

On second thoughts though... He does look a little like the younger Roddy McDowell, doesn't he. A bit.
